Get Access To All JobsTalent Acquisition Intern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Talent Acquisition Intern role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your academic program includes coursework in human resources, organizational behavior, workforce planning, or a related field. Your DSO will review the job description against your enrolled courses to confirm the role is an integral part of your curriculum. A generic internship listing isn't enough. You'll need to show the specific connection between the job duties and your coursework when you submit your CPT request.
Can I do CPT at a staffing agency or recruiting firm instead of an in-house HR team?
Yes. CPT can be authorized at staffing agencies, executive search firms, or RPO providers, not just in-house talent acquisition departments. The determining factor is whether your daily work involves recruiting activities that tie to your academic program. Your I-20 will list the specific employer, so if you're placed at a client site through the agency, confirm with your DSO how that arrangement is documented.
How do I find employers that regularly hire F-1 students for talent acquisition internships?
Migrate Mate lets you filter by employers with F-1 hiring history in HR and recruiting roles using DOL filing data. This is more reliable than browsing general intern listings, since it shows you which companies have actually sponsored work-authorized candidates rather than which ones simply post open positions.
Will full-time CPT as a Talent Acquisition Intern affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT authorized for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, doesn't affect OPT. Most Talent Acquisition Internships run 10 to 12 weeks full-time, which keeps you under the 12-month threshold. If an employer wants to extend your internship, calculate your cumulative full-time CPT days carefully before agreeing and confirm with your DSO.
What happens if my CPT end date passes but my internship isn't finished?
Working past your authorized CPT end date is unauthorized employment, which carries serious immigration consequences including potential F-1 status violations. If your project or internship needs to extend, contact your DSO before the current authorization expires and request an updated I-20 with a new end date. Your employer will need to provide documentation of the extended engagement for your DSO to process the update.
