Does an HR internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role directly integrates with your degree curriculum. An HR internship qualifies when your program includes coursework in organizational behavior, employment law, compensation, or talent management and your school can document that connection. Your DSO makes the final determination, but roles involving recruiting coordination, onboarding, or HR systems administration routinely receive CPT approval at programs with an HR or business management focus.
How do I find HR internship employers who understand CPT?
Search for HR internships on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with documented work-authorization history so you're not cold-educating every recruiter about F-1 CPT requirements. Prioritizing E-Verify-enrolled employers also helps because their HR teams already process I-9 documentation daily and won't be caught off guard when you present your CPT-authorized I-20.
Can I do a full-time HR internship on CPT without affecting my OPT?
Only if you stay under 12 cumulative months of full-time CPT across your entire F-1 program. Once full-time CPT totals 12 months or more, USCIS considers your OPT eligibility forfeited. Part-time CPT, defined as under 20 hours per week, never counts toward that limit regardless of how many semesters you use it, so a part-time HR internship is a common way to protect future OPT.
What documents does an HR internship employer need from me on CPT?
Your employer completes an I-9 using your CPT-authorized I-20 as the List A document alongside your foreign passport. The I-20 must show your employer's name, the exact start and end dates, and whether the CPT is full-time or part-time. Some HR teams also ask for your current visa stamp and I-94 record. USCIS does not require a separate work permit for CPT, and no employer-filed petition is needed.
Does the HR internship start date have to match my CPT authorization date exactly?
Yes. You cannot begin work even one day before the CPT start date printed on your I-20, and you must stop working on or before the end date. HR internships that start mid-semester sometimes have flexible onboarding, but your DSO authorization is tied to exact calendar dates. If your employer moves the start date, you need a revised I-20 from your DSO before you show up on day one.
