Get Access To All JobsStrategy Intern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Strategy Intern role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the internship is an integral part of your curriculum. Strategy intern work, competitive analysis, market research, business modeling, typically maps to courses in business strategy, economics, or management. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring the offer letter and connect each listed job duty to a specific course or program requirement before requesting authorization.
Can I do a strategy internship part-time on CPT while taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT is 20 hours or fewer per week while school is in session and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility, regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT, more than 20 hours per week, counts against your OPT: 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates it entirely, so confirm your weekly hours with your DSO before your start date.
What documents do I need to start a CPT strategy internship?
You need a DSO-authorized I-20 with the CPT endorsement, the employer's offer letter, and your valid F-1 visa status. The offer letter must include the employer name, job title, start and end dates, and weekly hours. You don't need a separate EAD card for CPT, the updated I-20 is your work authorization document. Never start work before your DSO issues the updated I-20.
How do I find Strategy Intern roles where employers already understand CPT?
Many smaller companies have never hired an F-1 student and don't know what CPT requires of them. Migrate Mate lists strategy internship roles filtered for employers with documented experience sponsoring international students and F-1 work authorization, which reduces the time you spend educating HR about the process before getting an offer.
Does my strategy internship employer need to file anything with USCIS for CPT?
No. CPT authorization is entirely school-based. USCIS is not involved, the employer files nothing, and there's no government fee. Your DSO updates your I-20 and that document authorizes your employment. The employer's only obligation is to verify your work authorization during I-9 onboarding, which your endorsed I-20 satisfies. This is one reason CPT is faster to activate than most other F-1 employment categories.
