CPT Tax Intern Jobs
Tax Intern roles sit at the intersection of accounting coursework and real client work, making them a strong CPT fit for F-1 students in business, accounting, or finance programs. Your DSO must authorize CPT before your start date, and the internship must tie directly to your degree requirements.

Does a Tax Intern role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your accounting, finance, or business program includes a practicum, internship, or experiential learning requirement tied to tax coursework. Your DSO determines whether the specific role qualifies. Bring your offer letter and a description of the job duties to your DSO appointment so they can confirm the curriculum connection before authorizing CPT.
Can I work at a public accounting firm on CPT if they ask about future H-1B sponsorship?
CPT is independent of H-1B visa. You're authorized to work through your school's CPT approval, not through employer sponsorship. Many public accounting firms do sponsor H-1B petitions after full-time offers, but that conversation is separate from your CPT internship. Don't let uncertainty about future sponsorship stop you from applying to firms that actively hire F-1 interns.
What happens if my tax internship extends past my CPT end date?
You must stop working the moment your CPT authorization expires. If the firm extends your internship, return to your DSO for a new I-20 with updated CPT dates before continuing. Working even one day beyond your authorized end date is an unauthorized employment violation and can affect your F-1 status and future OPT eligibility.
How do I find Tax Intern roles where employers already understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with work-authorization history in accounting and tax roles. Firms that have hired F-1 students before know how CPT documentation works and are far less likely to rescind offers over authorization questions. This saves you from educating HR during an already competitive recruiting season.
Does a part-time tax internship during the semester count as CPT?
Part-time CPT is 20 hours per week or fewer and doesn't count against your OPT eligibility, no matter how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT, which is more than 20 hours per week, does count if used for 12 months or more. If your internship is part-time during the academic semester, confirm the weekly hours in your offer letter and reflect that accurately in your CPT authorization request.
