CPT Legal Intern Jobs
Legal Intern roles in law firms, corporate legal departments, and public interest organizations qualify for CPT when your DSO authorizes the position as integral to your degree program. Your CPT authorization must match the specific employer and start date, so confirm your I-20 reflects the correct terms before your first day.

Get Access To All JobsLegal Intern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a legal internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your academic program includes a practicum, externship, or field placement component that the internship satisfies. Your DSO must authorize the specific position as integral to your curriculum. General interest in law is not sufficient. The connection between the legal work you'll perform and your degree requirements must be documented and approved before your start date.
Can I do CPT at a law firm if I'm not in a law degree program?
Yes. CPT eligibility is tied to your specific degree program requirements, not the employer's industry. A business, political science, or paralegal studies student can receive CPT authorization for a legal internship if their school curriculum formally includes workplace training in a legal setting. Your DSO determines whether the placement qualifies, not the law firm.
How do I find legal intern employers who are familiar with F-1 CPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with a track record of hiring F-1 students, which shortens the time you spend educating HR about CPT authorization. Many smaller law firms have never hired an international student and may confuse CPT with visa sponsorship. Starting with employers who already understand F-1 work authorization reduces delays and misunderstandings during the offer stage.
Does CPT for a legal internship count against my 12 months of OPT?
Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or less, does not reduce your OPT eligibility regardless of how many months you use it. Full-time CPT, meaning more than 20 hours per week, counts against your 12-month OPT pool only if you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT. Confirm your weekly hours with your DSO before accepting a full-time legal internship offer.
What documents does a law firm need from me to verify my CPT authorization?
You'll need to provide your current I-20 with the CPT authorization section completed by your DSO, showing the employer name, authorized start and end dates, and whether the authorization is part-time or full-time. Some employers also request your F-1 visa stamp and I-94 record. E-Verify-enrolled employers will complete employment eligibility verification through that system using your I-20 and passport.
