Get Access To All JobsConstruction Intern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a construction internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role directly connects to your degree program, such as civil engineering, construction management, or architecture. Your DSO will assess whether the position integrates with your curriculum. Roles involving site supervision, cost estimation, scheduling, or structural inspection typically qualify, but a generic labor position without a curricular link will not.
Can I start a construction internship before my CPT is officially authorized?
No. Working before your DSO updates your I-20 with CPT authorization is a violation of your F-1 status. Construction employers often want an early start date, but you must have the authorized I-20 in hand before your first day on site. Ask your DSO for the processing timeline as soon as you receive your offer letter.
How do I find construction companies that are familiar with hiring CPT students?
Browse Construction Intern listings on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers with international student hiring experience. Many smaller regional contractors have never onboarded an F-1 student before, so targeting firms that have already worked through CPT or OPT paperwork saves significant time during the offer process.
What happens to my OPT if I complete a year-long construction CPT internship?
If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, USCIS eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count toward that limit. Before accepting a full-year construction placement, confirm your running CPT total with your DSO to protect your post-graduation work authorization.
Does my construction internship employer need to be E-Verify enrolled for CPT?
Yes. Employers hiring F-1 students are required to use E-Verify to confirm work authorization. Construction companies, especially smaller subcontractors or regional firms, may not be enrolled. Confirm E-Verify status before signing any offer paperwork. If the employer isn't enrolled, they'll need to complete that process before your start date, which can take several weeks.
