CPT Intern Jobs
Intern roles are among the most CPT-eligible positions available to F-1 students, but your DSO must certify the work is directly tied to your degree program before you start. Positions that blend real project responsibility with curriculum-aligned learning carry the strongest authorization cases.

Get Access To All JobsIntern CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does every intern position qualify for CPT authorization?
Not automatically. Your DSO authorizes CPT only if the intern role is an integral part of your established curriculum, which typically means the work appears in your program's course catalog as a practicum, co-op, or required experiential component. Roles that are loosely related to your field but not tied to a specific course or program requirement often don't clear that threshold, and your school sets the final standard, not USCIS.
Can I do a remote internship on CPT?
Yes, remote intern roles are eligible for CPT, but the employer's physical address, not your home location, determines the CPT authorization site listed on your I-20. If the company later asks you to work from a different location than what was authorized, you need a new CPT authorization from your DSO before that change takes effect. Confirm the work location in your offer letter before submitting your CPT request.
How do I find intern employers who understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for intern openings filtered by employers with F-1 authorization experience. Companies that have hired CPT students before are less likely to rescind offers over documentation confusion or request forms that don't apply to your situation. Targeting those employers at the outset cuts down on recruiter education time and accelerates your start date.
What happens to my CPT if my internship gets extended?
Each CPT authorization covers a specific employer, location, and date range as printed on your I-20. If your internship is extended beyond that end date, you must request a new or updated CPT authorization from your DSO before continuing to work. Working even a single day past your authorized end date without a new I-20 is a status violation, regardless of how the extension was presented by your employer.
Does a paid internship affect my CPT authorization differently than an unpaid one?
Compensation doesn't change the CPT eligibility standard. Both paid and unpaid intern roles must meet the same curricular integration requirement your DSO and school policy define. What does matter is the wage rate if your employer files an LCA for a related visa later, since DOL prevailing wage rules apply to formal work authorization filings. For CPT itself, focus on the curricular link, not whether the position is compensated.
