Get Access To All JobsPeople Operations Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a People Operations Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if your DSO determines the work is an integral part of your curriculum, not just a related job. Roles involving workforce planning, employee lifecycle management, or HR systems implementation typically satisfy this requirement for students in HR management, organizational behavior, or business administration programs. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program requirements.
Can I do CPT as a People Operations Manager if I'm in a non-HR graduate program?
Yes, if you can demonstrate direct curricular relevance. MBA students, for example, often secure CPT for People Ops roles by citing organizational behavior, talent strategy, or leadership coursework. The connection has to be documented and approved by your DSO, a general business argument isn't always enough without specific course alignment in your academic plan.
How do I find People Operations Manager jobs where the employer understands CPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces People Operations Manager roles at employers with verified H-1B visa filing history in HR and business operations. Employers who have sponsored H-1B petitions before understand work authorization timelines and are more likely to have HR or legal resources in place to process your CPT documentation without delays or confusion.
What happens to my CPT if the employer changes my job title or duties after I start?
A material change in your role, such as a shift from generalist HR work to a purely administrative function, can jeopardize your CPT authorization because the authorization is tied to a specific position. You'd need to notify your DSO, who must evaluate whether the revised duties still qualify and may need to issue an updated I-20. Don't wait until your program end date to flag the change.
Does working full-time as a People Operations Manager on CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve months or more of full-time pre-completion CPT exhausts your OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT doesn't count against OPT. If your People Operations Manager role is full-time and extends over a year, plan your post-graduation work authorization strategy before crossing that threshold, once OPT is used up, it can't be recovered.
