Get Access To All JobsPower Apps Developer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Power Apps Developer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role directly ties to your degree program. Computer science, management information systems, and information technology programs routinely approve Power Apps Developer positions because the work involves software development, data modeling, and enterprise systems, all of which map to core curriculum competencies. Your DSO makes the final call, so bring a job description that lists specific technical deliverables rather than a generic title.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Power Apps Developer without affecting my OPT?
You can work full-time on CPT, but 12 or more months of full-time CPT use exhausts your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, doesn't count against OPT regardless of how long you use it. Most F-1 students in Power Apps roles structure longer engagements as part-time CPT to preserve their full 12-month OPT, plus the 24-month STEM extension if their degree qualifies.
What job duties support a strong CPT authorization case for this role?
DSOs look for duties that mirror coursework. For Power Apps Developer positions, that means building Canvas or Model-driven applications, configuring Power Automate flows, integrating with Dataverse or external APIs, and writing technical documentation. Roles that list only vague responsibilities like 'support business users' are harder to authorize. Ask the employer for a detailed scope of work before submitting your CPT request.
How do I find Power Apps Developer jobs where employers already understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Power Apps Developer roles and look for employers with established work-authorization hiring patterns. Larger technology consulting firms, financial services companies, and healthcare organizations that have hired F-1 students before typically have HR processes in place for I-20 review and I-9 completion with CPT documents, reducing back-and-forth after you receive an offer.
Does my employer need to do anything with USCIS for my CPT?
No. CPT authorization is entirely school-driven. USCIS is not involved, and your employer doesn't file any petition. Your DSO updates your I-20 to reflect the authorization, and your employer completes your I-9 using that document combined with your valid F-1 visa and passport. The employer's only obligation is standard I-9 compliance, which includes E-Verify enrollment if they're already participating in that program.
