Get Access To All JobsService Operations Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Service Operations Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on whether the role connects directly to your degree program. Service Operations Manager positions typically qualify for students in business administration, supply chain management, industrial engineering, or operations research programs. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific coursework and the job duties described in the employer's offer letter.
Can I work full-time as a Service Operations Manager on CPT?
Yes, but full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, has a significant consequence. Any 12-month period of full-time CPT eliminates your entire 12-month OPT authorization. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, doesn't affect OPT eligibility. Most F-1 students in operations roles structure their CPT as part-time to preserve OPT for post-graduation.
What documents does my employer need to provide for CPT authorization?
Your employer must provide a formal offer letter that includes the exact job title as Service Operations Manager, the physical work location address, the start and end dates, and the number of hours per week. Your DSO uses these details to amend your I-20. Some schools also require a brief explanation of how the duties connect to your academic program.
Does CPT work experience as a Service Operations Manager help with future H-1B sponsorship?
CPT work experience can strengthen your case for H-1B visa sponsorship after graduation by demonstrating you've performed specialty occupation duties. Operations manager roles are generally recognized as specialty occupations under O*NET classifications. Employers who hire you on CPT are also better positioned to sponsor an H-1B because they've already assessed your qualifications. You can find CPT-compatible employers with sponsorship history on Migrate Mate.
Can I switch employers or job sites while on CPT authorization?
No. Each CPT authorization is tied to a specific employer, location, and date range on your I-20. If your role moves to a different employer site, the company restructures, or you want to join a different organization, you need a new CPT authorization from your DSO before the change takes effect. Working at an unauthorized location or employer violates your F-1 status.
