Get Access To All JobsSupply Chain CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a supply chain CPT role need to be in my declared major?
The work must be directly tied to your curriculum, not necessarily your exact major title. A computer science student enrolled in a supply chain analytics course can use CPT for a demand planning role if the DSO can draw a clear line between the job duties and that coursework. The connection to a specific course or program requirement is what matters.
Can I do CPT at a third-party logistics company or freight forwarder?
Yes. CPT authorization covers the employer named in your DSO approval, whether that's a manufacturer, a 3PL, or a freight forwarder. The employer type doesn't affect eligibility. What matters is that the duties, carrier management, warehouse coordination, customs compliance, align with your academic program and that your DSO approves that specific employer before your start date.
How do I find supply chain employers who are open to CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces companies with documented DOL Labor Condition Application activity in supply chain and operations roles. Employers who have filed LCAs before are generally more familiar with work authorization requirements and more likely to support CPT onboarding without internal HR friction.
What happens if my CPT supply chain role turns into a full-time offer?
CPT itself has no direct path to a visa, but a full-time offer lets you transition to OPT after graduation, and then potentially H-1B visa sponsorship. Supply chain roles, including logistics analyst, sourcing manager, and operations research analyst positions, commonly qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B, so the employer's willingness to file later is worth confirming before you accept.
Is full-time CPT allowed, and does it affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT is allowed but has a significant consequence: one year or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or less, has no impact on OPT. Many supply chain internships run as part-time or co-op arrangements precisely to preserve OPT, so clarify the expected hours before your DSO submits authorization.
