Does a Social Media Marketing internship qualify for CPT?
It qualifies if the role is directly tied to your degree program and your school formally integrates it into your curriculum, whether through a required internship course, academic credit, or a documented experiential learning requirement. A general marketing internship with no curricular connection won't satisfy CPT eligibility, even if the job title matches your major.
Can I do CPT for a fully remote Social Media Marketing role?
Remote work is permitted for CPT as long as your DSO authorizes it and the employer can document your employment. Your I-20 must reflect the correct employer and start date regardless of work location. Some schools require the employer to have a verifiable U.S. business address, so confirm your institution's specific policy before accepting a fully remote offer.
How do I find Social Media Marketing employers familiar with CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you browse Social Media Marketing roles filtered by employers who have previously worked with F-1 students on work authorization. This saves time by surfacing companies where you won't need to explain CPT from scratch during the hiring process, which is a common friction point for students in creative and marketing roles.
Does part-time CPT count against my full-time CPT limit?
Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count toward the 12-month threshold that triggers OPT ineligibility. Full-time CPT above 20 hours per week does count. If your Social Media Marketing role is structured as a part-time engagement alongside coursework, confirm the weekly hour commitment in writing with your employer before authorization.
What job duties in Social Media Marketing actually satisfy CPT's integral requirement?
Duties that directly apply coursework in digital marketing, communications, data analytics, or consumer behavior typically satisfy the integral requirement. Managing paid social campaigns, producing content strategy documents, analyzing audience metrics, or building brand reporting dashboards all map to recognized academic competencies. Generic administrative tasks like scheduling posts without strategic input generally don't meet the standard most DSOs apply.
