Get Access To All JobsStrategic Business Development CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Strategic Business Development role qualify for CPT?
It qualifies if your school's DSO confirms the role is an integral part of your degree curriculum. Business development positions typically align with MBA, management, or international business programs. The deciding factor is whether your academic adviser can tie the job's core tasks, market analysis, partnership strategy, revenue pipeline work, to required or elective coursework.
Can I do CPT for a startup in Strategic Business Development?
Yes. CPT authorization doesn't require the employer to be a large corporation or E-Verify enrollee. Startups qualify as long as the role is a legitimate paid or unpaid position tied to your curriculum. Check that the startup can provide an offer letter with a clear job title and start date, since your DSO requires that documentation before updating your I-20.
How does CPT in business development affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, doesn't affect OPT. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, keep your CPT under the 12-month full-time threshold and track your cumulative hours carefully with your DSO.
What documents does my employer need to provide for CPT authorization?
Your employer needs to provide a signed offer letter stating your job title, start date, work location, and whether the position is paid or unpaid. Some schools also require a brief description of duties. Your DSO uses these documents to verify the role fits your curriculum before issuing the CPT endorsement on your I-20.
Where can I find Strategic Business Development jobs that support CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you search by employers with LCA filing history, which identifies companies experienced with international student work authorization. Strategic Business Development roles at these employers are more likely to have HR teams that understand CPT timelines and can issue offer letters quickly enough for you to meet your school's CPT application deadlines.
