Does a Sales Business Development internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the role directly integrates with your degree program's curriculum and your school authorizes it before you start. The job must be listed in your program's cooperative education or internship requirement, your DSO will verify this. A Sales Business Development role tied to a marketing, business, or management degree typically satisfies this standard, but approval depends on your specific program and school policy.
Can I work on CPT in a commission-only Sales Business Development role?
It depends on your school's CPT policy. Some schools require a base salary component to confirm the employment relationship is consistent and curricular. Commission-only arrangements can make it harder to document a regular work schedule, which some DSOs require. Confirm your school's compensation requirements before accepting an offer structured primarily around variable pay.
How do I find Sales Business Development employers who are comfortable hiring F-1 CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you search Sales Business Development roles filtered by employers with documented work authorization history, so you can focus on companies that have already navigated F-1 onboarding. Targeting employers enrolled in E-Verify also signals they have an established I-9 process and are familiar with work authorization documentation requirements.
Does full-time CPT in a Sales Business Development role affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT exhausts your OPT eligibility entirely, including the post-completion OPT period. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not affect OPT. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully and discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting a full-time CPT offer.
What job titles count as Sales Business Development for CPT purposes?
CPT authorization is tied to your degree's curricular requirements, not a specific job title. Roles like Business Development Representative, Sales Development Representative, Account Executive, Market Development Associate, and Strategic Partnerships Coordinator can all qualify if your DSO confirms the responsibilities align with your program's learning outcomes. Review the O*NET occupation profile for your target role to identify the competencies your degree program should formally address.
