Data Governance Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data governance manager in California?
Most data governance managers in California start with a bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science, business analytics, or a related field, then build experience in data analyst, data steward, or database administrator roles before moving into governance. California does not issue a state license for this position, but employers consistently favor candidates who hold the Certified Data Management Professional credential offered by DAMA International. Familiarity with California Consumer Privacy Act requirements is a strong differentiator in this state's market.
How much do data governance managers make in California?
Data governance managers in California earn a median of about $218,290 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $129,970 for the lowest 10% to over $325,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data governance managers in California?
Employers hiring data governance managers in California right now include Petco, GFT, and KLA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, large health systems, and major financial institutions means demand is spread across multiple industries rather than limited to a single sector.
Which California cities have the most data governance manager jobs?
San Francisco, San Jose, and San Diego have the most data governance manager openings in California. San Francisco leads because of its density of technology and fintech headquarters, Los Angeles draws demand from entertainment, media, and healthcare conglomerates, and San Diego's biotech and defense industries generate consistent governance hiring, particularly around research data and regulatory compliance.
Are there remote data governance manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Data governance is largely a desk-based, analytical, and policy-oriented discipline, making it well suited to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 40% of data governance manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly employers have embraced flexible work for this function. The portions of the role most commonly done remotely include policy development, data catalog administration, and cross-team training.
How can I get hired as a data governance manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a data steward or junior data analyst role first, then building governance responsibilities from within. Large California technology companies and health systems such as UC Health frequently post associate data analyst and data operations roles that serve as stepping stones. Completing the DAMA Certified Data Management Professional certification or a recognized data governance course demonstrates initiative to hiring managers. A portfolio showing metadata documentation work or a data quality improvement project gives candidates without formal governance titles a concrete edge.
Where can I find and apply to data governance manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to data governance manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each employer through the listing.
