Deputy Attorney General Jobs in Oregon: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a deputy attorney general in Oregon?
You must hold a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and be an active member of the Oregon State Bar, which requires passing the Oregon Bar Exam and meeting character and fitness requirements administered by the Oregon Board of Bar Examiners. Most positions with the Oregon Department of Justice also require a background investigation. New attorneys may apply through DOJ's law graduate recruitment cycle, which opens annually and targets recent bar admittees seeking public sector experience.
Which companies hire deputy attorney generals in Oregon?
Oregon deputy attorney general roles are posted by Josephine County, Lane County, and Lane County, OR and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The Oregon Department of Justice is by far the largest single employer, but Metro regional government, the Oregon Health Authority, and university systems such as Oregon State University and the University of Oregon also post staff attorney and deputy roles within their legal offices.
Which Oregon cities have the most deputy attorney general jobs?
Grants Pass, Bend, and Eugene account for most deputy attorney general openings in Oregon. Salem leads because it is the state capital and home to the Oregon Department of Justice headquarters, while Portland's volume reflects its size and the concentration of state agency satellite offices, regional government bodies, and large public employers that maintain in-house legal divisions there.
How can I get hired as a deputy attorney general in Oregon with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to the Oregon Department of Justice law graduate recruitment program, which is designed for attorneys who have recently passed the Oregon Bar and have limited practice experience. Externships with the DOJ during law school, clerkships with Oregon circuit or appellate courts, and positions as a public defender or district attorney deputy build directly transferable experience. Demonstrating strong legal writing through a writing sample and holding active Oregon Bar membership are the credentials that matter most at this stage.
Where can I find and apply to deputy attorney general jobs in Oregon?
You can find and apply to deputy attorney general jobs in Oregon on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your practice area and experience level, and apply directly through each listing. No account is needed to view or access the postings.
