Tips for Your Developer Advocacy Job Search
Show code alongside your writing
Developer advocacy hiring managers expect a portfolio that mixes technical output with communication. Link to repos, conference talk recordings, and blog posts that demonstrate you can ship code and explain it clearly to a developer audience.
Tailor your resume to the audience tier
Roles targeting enterprise developers weight different skills than those targeting hobbyists or students. Read the job description for phrases like 'enterprise SDK', 'open-source community', or 'hackathon programs' and mirror that language directly in your resume.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists developer advocacy openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by company developer product maturity
A startup with a new API needs advocates who can build community from scratch. A mature platform needs advocates who can scale content and enablement. Target your search toward companies whose product stage matches where you do your best work.
Prepare a technical talk or demo for interviews
Most developer advocacy interview loops include a live presentation or demo exercise. Practice a five-to-ten minute technical talk on a topic you know deeply so you can demonstrate clarity, audience awareness, and the ability to field live questions.
Negotiate for conference and travel budget
Developer advocacy compensation packages often include a discretionary budget for speaking and community events. Ask about this budget explicitly during the offer stage, since it directly affects your ability to do the job and build an industry profile.
Developer Advocacy Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most developer advocacys?
The companies hiring the most developer advocacys right now include Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Citi, and Infojini, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Cloud platform companies and developer-tool startups consistently account for a large portion of active postings.
How many developer advocacy jobs are remote?
About 24% of developer advocacy openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more location-flexible roles in the tech industry. Technical content and community management sub-specializations tend to be the most remote-friendly, while roles focused on in-person developer events or enterprise field work are more likely to require a specific location.
How do you become a developer advocacy?
Start by building a public body of technical work: write tutorials, record screencasts, or contribute to open-source projects that demonstrate you can create content developers find useful. Speak at local meetups or submit proposals to developer conferences to establish a public presence. Once you have a portfolio of content and some speaking experience, apply to junior or associate developer advocate roles at companies whose products you genuinely use and understand.
Can you get a developer advocacy job with little or no experience?
Yes, but you need to substitute direct work history with demonstrated output. Hiring managers for entry-level roles look for a GitHub profile with active contributions, a personal technical blog, or recordings of talks at community events. Developer advocacy teams at larger companies sometimes hire from adjacent roles like technical support, software engineering, or technical writing, so experience in any of those areas is a credible entry point.
What does the developer advocacy interview process look like?
Most loops open with a recruiter screen focused on your technical background and public work, followed by conversations with the developer relations team lead and cross-functional partners in product and engineering. A core stage is a live technical presentation or demo exercise where you explain a concept or walk through a product feature as if presenting to a developer audience. Final rounds typically include a conversation with a senior leader about strategy, community philosophy, and how you measure advocacy impact.
Where can I find and apply to developer advocacy jobs?
You can find and apply to developer advocacy jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your background and specialization, then apply directly to each one that fits.
