Development Engineer Jobs in Alaska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a development engineer in Alaska?
Most employers in Alaska require a bachelor's degree in engineering, typically in petroleum, civil, mechanical, or chemical disciplines, from an ABET-accredited program. For roles that involve signing off on designs or managing public-safety projects, you will need licensure through the Alaska State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors, which requires passing the Fundamentals of Engineering and Principles and Practice of Engineering exams. Many oil and gas positions sponsor new engineers through that licensure path.
How much do development engineers make in Alaska?
Development engineers in Alaska earn a median of about $106,080 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $106,080 for the lowest 10% to over $142,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire development engineers in Alaska?
Alaska development engineer roles are posted by Goldbelt, Ryder System, and Southcentral Foundation and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alaska's oil and gas, mining, and large infrastructure sectors are the most consistent sources of full-time development engineer openings across the state.
Which Alaska cities have the most development engineer jobs?
Juneau, Anchorage, and Alaska have the most development engineer openings in Alaska. Anchorage dominates because most major operators and engineering contractors headquarter their Alaska operations there, while Fairbanks and Kenai serve as regional hubs for north slope logistics, pipeline operations, and Cook Inlet energy projects that require dedicated engineering staff.
Are there remote development engineer jobs in Alaska?
Yes, but they're rare. About 20% of development engineer openings tied to Alaska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, since much of the work involves fieldwork, site inspections, and equipment commissioning that cannot be done remotely. The portions of the role most likely to allow remote work are data analysis, modeling, and project reporting tasks.
How can I get hired as a development engineer in Alaska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a new-graduate or junior engineer program at a major Alaska operator or contractor. ConocoPhillips Alaska and the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company have historically brought on junior engineers, and engineering and construction contractors supporting the oil and gas sector regularly hire associate or field engineers as entry roles. Starting as a project engineer, engineering technician, or operations technician in a related discipline gives hands-on Alaska field exposure and a direct route to a development engineer title. Completing your Fundamentals of Engineering exam before applying makes your application noticeably stronger.
Where can I find and apply to development engineer jobs in Alaska?
You can find and apply to development engineer jobs in Alaska on Migrate Mate, which lists current Alaska openings from employers across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and location preferences, and apply directly through each listing.
