Frame your degree for specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree to align directly with the AI Platform Engineer role, not just any technical field. If your Australian degree is in mathematics or electrical engineering, document how your coursework maps to ML infrastructure and distributed systems work.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Foreign Labor Application Gateway for companies that have filed LCAs for AI, ML, or platform engineering roles. Employers who have filed before understand the process and are far less likely to withdraw an offer over sponsorship paperwork.
Clarify contractor versus direct-hire arrangements early
E-3 visa sponsorship must come from your direct employer, not a staffing agency or client company. If a recruiter places you at a tech company as a contractor, the staffing firm is your legal employer of record and must file the LCA, which many won't do.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for LCA and consulate prep
The LCA must be certified by DOL before you can schedule your consulate appointment. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so your offer timeline isn't held up by form errors or incorrect prevailing wage classifications.
Confirm your Australian degree equivalency before interviews
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 purposes, but some consular officers request a credential evaluation. Getting a formal equivalency assessment before your interview removes a common point of friction.
Negotiate your start date around LCA certification timelines
DOL typically certifies LCAs within seven business days, but errors reset the clock. Build at least three weeks between your signed offer and your proposed start date so your employer can file, certify, and get you to your consulate appointment without pressure.
E-3 Visa AI Platform Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find AI Platform Engineer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for roles that include E-3 sponsorship. You can filter by job title, location, and employer sponsorship history so you're only reviewing companies that have already navigated the E-3 or H-1B visa process, rather than cold-applying and discovering sponsorship is off the table after multiple interview rounds.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an AI Platform Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for E-3?
Yes. AI Platform Engineer roles require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, machine learning, or a closely related technical field, which satisfies the USCIS specialty occupation definition. The role involves designing, deploying, and maintaining AI infrastructure at a level of complexity that rules out generalist degree holders, making it a strong fit for E-3 qualification.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for AI Platform Engineer roles?
The H-1B is subject to an annual lottery with a roughly 25% selection rate, meaning you could have an offer and still not receive authorization for that fiscal year. The E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap, so as an Australian national you can apply any time you have a qualifying offer. The E-3 is also renewable indefinitely in two-year increments, giving you the same long-term stability without the lottery risk.
Can I switch employers after starting work on an E-3?
Yes, but each new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new visa stamp from an Australian consulate or a U.S. consulate abroad before you can work for the new company. There's no portability provision like H-1B's AC21 rule, so you shouldn't resign until the new LCA is certified and your interview is scheduled.
