Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
USCIS evaluates Platform Engineer roles against the specialty occupation definition. Document that your position requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field like computer science or systems engineering, not just any degree, before applying.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Foreign Labor Application Gateway (FLAG) for employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for platform or infrastructure roles. Prior LCA filings signal an employer already understands the E-3 visa process and has HR infrastructure to support it.
Address cloud platform specializations in your application
Platform Engineer roles often split across AWS, GCP, and Azure stacks. Specify your primary platform in your resume and cover letter so hiring managers can match your skills to their LCA's stated job duties, which must align with your actual responsibilities.
Clarify E-3 advantages when negotiating your offer
When an employer raises H-1B lottery risk as a concern, explain that the E-3 has no cap and no lottery. Your employer files an LCA with the DOL, you attend a consulate interview in Australia, and you can start within weeks of approval.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA and paperwork
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from LCA submission through consulate appointment preparation. This is particularly useful when your employer's HR team has no prior E-3 experience and needs a specialist to handle compliance and documentation.
Prepare your Australian degree for U.S. equivalency review
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 purposes. Have a credential evaluation ready before your consulate interview to preempt any officer questions about your qualification level.
E-3 Visa Platform Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Platform Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. You can filter Platform Engineer positions by employers who have sponsored E-3 or H-1B visas before, which removes the guesswork of approaching companies that have no sponsorship infrastructure. Standard job boards don't surface visa sponsorship history, so they're a much slower path.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Platform Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical discipline like computer science, software engineering, or information systems. Roles that accept any degree, or where a degree is listed as preferred rather than required, can create complications at the consulate. Your job offer letter and LCA must clearly state the degree requirement.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Platform Engineers in the United States?
The E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery, so there's no waiting for a random selection each April. You can apply as soon as you have a job offer and a certified LCA. The H-1B cap is 85,000 slots per year with far more applicants than slots, meaning most people wait years or never get selected. For Australian Platform Engineers, the E-3 is a direct route the H-1B simply can't match for reliability.
Can I change Platform Engineer employers while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but each new employer must file a fresh LCA with the DOL and you'll typically need to attend a new consulate interview or apply for a change of status if you're already in the United States. You can start working for the new employer once the new LCA is certified and you hold a valid E-3 visa for that role. There's no portability provision equivalent to H-1B AC21 for the E-3.
