Align your degree to the role
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree field to match the specialty occupation. A degree in computer science, software engineering, or electrical engineering supports a C software engineer petition. A general IT degree may trigger a Request for Evidence.
Target embedded and systems-focused employers
C engineering roles are concentrated in automotive, aerospace, semiconductor, and defense sectors. These industries file LCAs regularly and understand specialty occupation requirements, which shortens the internal approval process before your visa paperwork even starts.
Verify the job description before accepting
Your offer letter and job duties must demonstrate that a bachelor's degree in a specific field is a normal requirement for the role. Generic language like 'bachelor's preferred' can jeopardize your E-3 visa application, so confirm the wording with HR before signing.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA
The DOL Labor Condition Application must be certified before your consulate appointment. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to manage the LCA filing, prevailing wage compliance, and visa paperwork so your employer doesn't stall the process.
Prepare Australian credential equivalency documentation
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 purposes, but bring your academic transcripts and, if your employer requests it, a credential evaluation from a NACES-member evaluator.
Request a two-year validity period at your interview
Consular officers can issue E-3 visas for periods shorter than two years. Confirm your employer's LCA covers a two-year period and ask the officer explicitly to issue the full duration so your I-94 admission period aligns with your employment contract.
E-3 Visa Senior C Software Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find Senior C Software Engineer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. It filters listings to employers who have filed LCAs or have a demonstrated history of sponsoring specialty occupation visas, so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with the E-3 process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Senior C Software Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for E-3?
Yes. Senior C Software Engineer positions qualify because they require theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge and a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Embedded systems, firmware, and low-level driver development roles are well-documented specialty occupation categories under DOL and USCIS guidelines.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Senior C Software Engineer roles?
Both visas require a specialty occupation and a qualifying degree, but the E-3 has no annual lottery and no numerical cap for individual applications. H-1B visa selection is limited to 85,000 slots per fiscal year and decided by random lottery, meaning a qualified candidate can be rejected purely by chance. For Australian engineers, the E-3 removes that uncertainty entirely.
Can I change employers after starting work on an E-3 as a C software engineer?
Yes, but the E-3 is employer-specific. If you change jobs, your new employer must file a fresh LCA with the DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa issued at a consulate before starting with them. You can't transfer the visa the way an H-1B allows portability after 180 days. Plan for a consulate appointment gap between roles.
