Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Firmware Engineer
Translate your Australian credentials for U.S. employers
A three-year Australian engineering degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor's for E-3 visa purposes. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before interviews so you can confirm specialty occupation eligibility upfront.
Target employers with active embedded systems teams
Search DOL Labor Condition Application disclosure data to identify companies that have filed LCAs for Firmware Engineer or Embedded Software Engineer roles. These employers already understand the E-3 process and won't need educating on sponsorship requirements.
Find E-3 sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to identify employers with E-3 sponsorship history and handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end, from offer acceptance through your consulate appointment in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth.
Confirm the job posting requires a specific degree field
E-3 specialty occupation requires that the role normally demands a degree in a specific discipline. Firmware roles that accept any bachelor's degree, regardless of field, can fail the specialty occupation test at the consulate.
Push for LCA filing immediately after your offer
The LCA must be certified by DOL before your E-3 application can proceed. Ask your employer to file through FLAG as soon as you accept the offer, since LCA certification typically takes seven business days and delays here push back your entire consulate timeline.
Prepare for consulate questions about your technical scope
Consular officers ask Firmware Engineers to explain how their role requires specialized knowledge beyond general software development. Bring documentation connecting your degree field, your job description, and your day-to-day technical responsibilities.
E-3 Visa Firmware Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Firmware Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. You can filter by job title and see employers with a history of E-3 filings, so you're not cold-applying to companies that have never sponsored an Australian engineer before.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Firmware Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, in most cases. Firmware engineering requires specialized knowledge in embedded systems, real-time operating systems, or hardware-software integration, and employers typically require a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. The key risk is a job description written broadly enough that any degree would qualify, which can undermine the specialty occupation argument at the consulate.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Firmware Engineers?
The E-3 has no annual lottery and no cap, so you can apply at any time of year and start work as soon as your visa is approved. H-1B visa registration is limited to one entry window per year with a roughly 25% selection rate. For Australian Firmware Engineers, the E-3 is a direct route that doesn't depend on a lottery outcome.
Can I switch Firmware Engineer employers while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but you need a new LCA and a new E-3 visa stamp before you start with the new employer. Your E-3 status is tied to the specific job and employer listed in your visa documents. If you're already in the U.S., you'll need to depart and attend a new consulate interview, since E-3 cannot be extended by change of status from inside the country.
