Verify your degree maps to DevOps
A computer science or software engineering degree supports E-3 visa specialty occupation status cleanly. If your degree is in a different field, document how your coursework and certifications like AWS or Kubernetes directly underpin the staff-level DevOps role you're applying for.
Target employers with active LCA filings
Search the DOL's Foreign Labor Application Gateway for recent Labor Condition Application filings under SOC code 15-1244 (Network and Computer Systems Administrators) or 15-1299 to identify companies already experienced with the E-3 process and willing to sponsor Australian engineers.
Position staff-level scope in your resume
Staff DevOps roles require demonstrated ownership of infrastructure at scale, not just execution. Frame your resume around platform decisions, cross-team technical leadership, and systems you designed, since consular officers assess whether the role genuinely requires a degree-level specialist.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your LCA
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end. This matters most when your employer's HR team lacks E-3 experience, since errors on the LCA can delay your consulate appointment by weeks.
Prepare for specialty occupation questions at interview
Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth consular officers occasionally probe whether a staff DevOps role genuinely requires a degree. Bring your offer letter, job description, and any evidence of degree-level responsibilities like architecture diagrams or technical specifications you've authored.
E-3 Visa Staff Devops Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find Staff DevOps Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals seeking U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. It surfaces Staff DevOps Engineer positions at employers already familiar with the E-3 process, saving you the time of filtering out companies that only know the H-1B lottery pathway. Search by role, location, and sponsorship status directly on the platform.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Staff DevOps Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a closely related field. Staff-level DevOps roles typically meet this threshold because they demand architectural judgment and system design expertise that goes beyond what non-degree practitioners can demonstrate. If the job description lists a degree as preferred rather than required, that distinction can create problems at the consulate, so push the employer to use mandatory language.
How does the E-3 visa compare to H-1B for Staff DevOps Engineer roles?
The E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery, so you can apply any time of year and start work as soon as your visa is issued. H-1B registration closes in March with results in April, meaning you could wait over a year before starting. For staff-level DevOps roles, which often require an immediate start or a short transition window, the E-3's on-demand availability is a practical advantage that H-1B simply can't match.
Can I change DevOps employers while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but you need a new LCA filed by the new employer and a new E-3 visa stamp before you can start working there, unless you're changing status inside the U.S. through USCIS. The LCA process typically takes seven business days with the DOL. Plan for a gap between roles if your current visa is tied to your existing employer, since E-3 status is employer-specific and doesn't transfer automatically.
