Get your credentials formally evaluated
Australian archaeology degrees are typically three years, which some U.S. employers misread as insufficient. A credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service confirms your qualification is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's, strengthening your E-3 visa specialty occupation claim.
Target CRM firms with federal contracts
Cultural resource management companies holding federal contracts regularly hire archaeologists and are familiar with work visa sponsorship requirements. These employers already navigate DOL compliance for government projects, making LCA filing a routine step rather than a deterrent.
Distinguish field archaeology from research roles when applying
E-3 specialty occupation requires the role to theoretically and practically require a specific bachelor's degree. Positions framed as general field technician work may not qualify, so focus your applications on roles explicitly requiring a degree in archaeology or a directly related discipline.
Handle your LCA and filing through Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service
The LCA must be certified by DOL before your consulate appointment, and errors in the job description or wage attestation cause delays. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from offer to consulate appointment, including wage compliance and documentation.
Clarify sponsorship before the offer stage
Many archaeology employers haven't sponsored E-3 visas before but are open to it once they understand the process. Raising sponsorship early in discussions, and explaining that there's no lottery and no employer quota, removes the friction that kills offers at the final stage.
Align your interview timeline with consulate appointment availability
E-3 visa interviews are processed at U.S. consulates in Australia, and appointment slots at Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth vary by season. Confirm your employer's intended start date allows enough lead time for LCA certification and a consulate appointment, which can take several weeks.
E-3 Visa Archaeologist: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find archaeologist jobs in the U.S. that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. Beyond search, understanding which employer types regularly sponsor helps: federal agencies, national parks, universities with archaeological programs, and cultural resource management firms holding government contracts are your most productive targets.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an archaeologist role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in archaeology, anthropology, or a directly related field as a standard entry requirement. Roles framed as general field technician or survey crew positions may not meet the specialty occupation threshold, even if you hold a degree. The job description and employer documentation need to reflect a degree-required role.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for archaeologist roles?
The E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and has no annual lottery, no cap, and no registration fee. The H-1B visa is capped at 85,000 per year with a competitive lottery, meaning qualified archaeologists can be rejected purely by chance. For Australian nationals, the E-3 is a more reliable path to employment in the same specialty occupation roles that H-1B covers.
Can I change employers or move between archaeology projects on an E-3?
You can change employers, but each new position requires a fresh LCA filing with DOL and a new visa stamp if you're outside the U.S. at the time. If you're already in the U.S., a new LCA and updated DS-160 support the change, but you cannot begin work with the new employer until the LCA is certified and the new E-3 is approved or a valid status covers the gap.
