Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as an Author
Frame your degree field precisely
E-3 approval hinges on your degree matching the role. A communications or English degree supports most author positions, but a business degree alone may not. Check that your Australian qualification maps directly to the job's stated educational requirement before applying.
Target employers with dedicated content teams
Publishers, media companies, and in-house content studios hire authors under structured roles with clear degree requirements, which makes E-3 sponsorship straightforward. Avoid pitching to freelance marketplaces or agencies that classify writing work as contractor-based, since those arrangements don't support visa sponsorship.
Clarify the specialty occupation requirement early
Not every writing job qualifies as an E-3 specialty occupation. Ask hiring managers whether the role formally requires a bachelor's degree, not just prefers one. A job description that says 'degree preferred' can create problems at the consulate when the LCA is reviewed.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA step
The DOL Labor Condition Application is your employer's first filing obligation and a common point of delay. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so your employer isn't navigating the process alone, which can slow or derail an otherwise solid offer.
Negotiate who handles the filing before accepting
Smaller publishers and indie media companies often haven't sponsored an E-3 before. Agree in writing that your employer will file the LCA with the DOL before you resign from any current role or book flights, since the LCA must be certified before your consulate appointment can proceed.
Bring a strong portfolio to your consulate interview
Consular officers assessing author roles often scrutinize whether the work genuinely requires a degree. Bring published clips, bylines, or a portfolio that demonstrates professional-level writing tied to your field of study, not just general content creation. This directly supports the specialty occupation determination.

Find Author JobsAuthor E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find author jobs in the U.S. that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for author roles where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. Standard job boards don't filter by visa type, so you end up cold-screening dozens of listings. Migrate Mate surfaces roles relevant to Australian professionals and connects you with employers already familiar with the E-3 process, saving significant time in your search.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an author role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as English, journalism, communications, or creative writing. Roles that accept any degree or no degree don't meet the specialty occupation standard. The key is that the employer's job description must treat the degree as a requirement, not a preference, and the duties must align with that field of study.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Australian authors?
The E-3 is significantly more accessible for authors. There's no annual lottery, the 10,500-visa allocation has never been exhausted, and processing is handled at the consulate rather than through a lengthy USCIS petition. The H-1B requires lottery selection in April with a cap of 85,000 slots, meaning most applicants aren't selected regardless of qualification. For Australian nationals, the E-3 is the practical path.
Can my employer sponsor an E-3 if they've never done it before?
Yes. The E-3 process is employer-friendly compared to H-1B because it doesn't require a USCIS petition. Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, which is an online process that typically certifies within seven business days. You then attend a consulate interview in Australia. Many first-time sponsors complete the process smoothly with proper guidance on the LCA requirements and prevailing wage obligations.
