Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Civil Engineering Intern
Match your degree field to the role
E-3 visa eligibility requires your Australian engineering degree to align with the specific intern duties. A civil or structural engineering degree supports this directly. A general science degree needs documented coursework in civil disciplines to hold up at the consulate.
Target firms with active federal contracts
Infrastructure-focused consultancies and contractors working on federally funded projects are accustomed to prevailing wage compliance and DOL filings. These employers already have the HR infrastructure to process an LCA without treating it as an unusual request.
Request LCA filing before accepting the offer
Your employer must file the LCA with the DOL before you can apply for the E-3 at the consulate. Confirm they'll initiate this step immediately after the offer letter is signed so your consulate appointment timeline isn't delayed by paperwork lag.
Use Migrate Mate to handle your filing
The LCA and DS-160 need to be coordinated carefully for an intern-level E-3. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so your employer isn't navigating the DOL portal and consulate prep simultaneously without guidance.
Search firms verified with E-Verify
E-Verify enrollment signals that an employer has experience with work authorization compliance. When targeting civil engineering intern roles, filtering for E-Verify-enrolled firms reduces the risk of an employer declining after discovering what the sponsorship process involves.
Prepare your professional engineering documents early
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees, but bring your official transcripts and an academic credential evaluation to the consulate interview. Gaps in documentation are a common cause of 221(g) administrative delays.
E-3 Visa Civil Engineering Intern: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Civil Engineering Intern jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles that include E-3 visa sponsorship. Rather than filtering through generic job boards, Migrate Mate surfaces civil engineering intern positions where employers are open to the E-3 process, saving you from applying to roles that won't move forward once sponsorship comes up.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Civil Engineering Intern role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, if the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or a closely related engineering discipline as a minimum entry requirement. An intern role described as preferring a degree rather than requiring one can create problems at the consulate. Review the job description carefully and ask the employer to confirm the degree requirement in the offer letter before your LCA is filed.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Civil Engineering Intern roles?
The E-3 has a dedicated 10,500-per-year allocation for Australian nationals and no lottery, so you can apply at any time of year and start work once your visa is issued. The H-1B visa is subject to an annual cap and a random selection lottery, which means most new applicants wait until October at the earliest. For an intern role with a defined start date, the E-3 timeline is far more predictable.
Can I switch from a student visa to an E-3 while studying in the U.S.?
You can change status from F-1 to E-3 inside the U.S. by having your employer file a petition with USCIS, but most civil engineering intern employers prefer the consular route because it produces a visa stamp you can use for future re-entry. If you're approaching your OPT end date, confirm with your employer which filing route they'll use before the clock runs out.
