Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Design Consultant
Align your portfolio to U.S. specialty occupation standards
Design Consultant roles must meet the specialty occupation definition, meaning the job must require a specific bachelor's degree. Frame your portfolio and CV to show that your work demands specialized design knowledge, not general creative skills any graduate could perform.
Verify your Australian degree counts as equivalent
A three-year Australian bachelor's in industrial design, interior design, or a related field is generally accepted as equivalent to a four-year U.S. degree for E-3 visa purposes. Have your credentials assessed before the offer stage so there are no delays when the employer files the LCA.
Target employers with dedicated creative or design practices
Studios, architecture firms, and in-house design teams at major corporations are structured to sponsor specialty occupation visas. Focus your search on employers who already distinguish design as a technical function requiring specific academic training, not a generalist creative role.
Raise sponsorship before salary negotiations begin
E-3 sponsorship requires the employer to certify a prevailing wage through DOL's LCA process before you can apply. Confirm the employer understands this obligation and has HR capacity to file, ideally during the offer discussion rather than after signing.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA and consulate prep
The LCA must be certified by DOL before your consulate appointment, and design roles sometimes require supporting evidence of specialty occupation status. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from offer to consulate appointment, reducing back-and-forth with your employer's HR team.
Prepare for intent questions specific to creative professionals
Consular officers sometimes probe nonimmigrant intent more closely for design consultants who work across multiple clients. Bring your offer letter, LCA, and documentation showing the role is tied to a specific U.S. employer rather than a freelance or independent contractor arrangement.
E-3 Visa Design Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Design Consultant jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to filter Design Consultant roles by E-3 sponsorship status. Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, so you end up cold-applying to roles where the employer hasn't considered sponsorship at all. Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have already demonstrated willingness to sponsor, saving you from that process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Design Consultant role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in a specific design-related field such as industrial design, interior design, or graphic design. Roles that accept any degree, or where the design work is incidental to a broader function, are harder to qualify. The job description and your employer's internal classification both matter when USCIS or a consular officer reviews the LCA.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian Design Consultants?
The E-3 has a dedicated annual allocation of 10,500 visas exclusively for Australian nationals, and it has never been fully used, so there is no lottery. H-1B visa applications enter a randomized lottery with no outcome guarantee. For an Australian designer with a qualifying offer, the E-3 is far more predictable: you apply directly at a U.S. consulate in Australia after your employer certifies the LCA with DOL.
Can I switch between design clients or employers on an E-3?
You can change employers, but each new position requires a new LCA certified by DOL and, in most cases, a new E-3 visa stamp from a U.S. consulate in Australia. There is no portability rule like the one available under H-1B. If you're in a consulting arrangement where your placement changes regularly, discuss the structure of your employment contract with your sponsoring firm before filing.
