INTRODUCTION
The Center for a New American Security is an independent, bipartisan, nonprofit think tank that develops strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies. CNAS is looking to hire a graphic designer to work with our creative director, editors, and researchers to produce visual materials that elevate the presentation of our national security ideas and analysis. In this position you’ll have the opportunity to design everything from branded campaigns to infographics, custom illustrations, maps and charts, editorial design and layout, motion graphics, video, and web content.
This position is for a creative who loves variety: someone who can create novel cover art concepts for a report on drones, sketch out artboards for an explainer video on digital currency, or create new branding for a center-wide campaign, while also laying out 60 pages of text for a report on AI, developing a PowerPoint deck for an internal board meeting, or selecting a branded holiday gift for partners and employees. The research at CNAS is entrepreneurial and bold, enabling the design team to push boundaries with visual solutions.
Responsibilities
- Designing CNAS reports to include formatting text; placing assets; creating custom interior graphics and report cover art; preparing files for print and web; and designing assets for promotion.
- Creating infographics such as maps, charts, and data visualizations.
- Developing branding and illustrations for new projects or special events.
- Assisting teams with graphics development for presentations and events using non-designer tools like PowerPoint.
- Developing art and storyboards for motion designers to develop explainer videos.
- Assisting the creative director in ways to improve design team capabilities and processes.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Required:
- Has a BA/BS in graphic design or equivalent experience.
- Has a portfolio demonstrating relevant work across print and digital products.
- Is skilled in Adobe Creative Cloud — with an emphasis on InDesign — to create text-rich layouts for reports, magazines, newspapers, books, and marketing materials, with strong attention to detail in typesetting and formatting.
- Has experience creating data visualizations that translate complex topics into clear, compelling visuals.
- Understands digital design spaces and can produce graphics for social media, email, event platforms, websites, podcasts, and videos.
- Has experience building new brands as well as maintaining and evolving existing ones.
- Is well organized, manages multiple concurrent projects and files, and consistently meets deadlines — taking projects from brief to final delivery with sound design judgment and minimal oversight.
- Has experience working directly with clients or stakeholders: gathering requirements, pitching concepts, and confidently articulating the story and rationale behind design decisions.
- Works collaboratively and flexibly, integrating feedback from both designers and non-designers, and brings proactive creative instincts while remaining receptive to direction.
- Can communicate design principles to non-designers and equip colleagues with templates in tools like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Canva, and data visualization software.
- Has legal right to work in the United States.
- Is based in Washington, D.C. metro area (DC, MD, VA) or willing to relocate upon job offer. This position includes a mix of remote and in-person work, with a regular presence at our D.C. office expected. We're open to discussing the specific arrangement with strong candidates.
Preferred:
- Has 5+ years of design experience, or 3+ years in an agency or multi-designer studio environment.
- Has an interest in government, U.S. national security, foreign policy, or international relations.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Graphic Designer
Align your portfolio to U.S. degree standards
Your Australian three-year bachelor's degree is accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 purposes. Make sure your portfolio explicitly names the qualification so employers and the DOL can verify the specialty occupation link.
Target employers who write degree-required job postings
The E-3 depends on the job requiring a specific degree, not just preferring one. Search for Graphic Designer postings that state 'bachelor's degree in graphic design or visual communication required,' not 'preferred,' to confirm the role qualifies.
Ask about LCA filing before accepting an offer
Some creative studios and agencies have never filed an LCA before. Confirm your prospective employer is willing to file with the DOL before you accept and start the visa process, since the certified LCA is required before your consulate appointment.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the paperwork
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end. This is especially useful if your employer is unfamiliar with the E-3 process and needs guidance preparing the supporting documentation.
Prepare a specialty occupation letter for creative roles
Graphic design can attract scrutiny at the consulate if the officer questions whether it meets the specialty occupation standard. A letter from your employer explaining how the role requires degree-level design knowledge reduces that risk significantly.
Book your consulate appointment immediately after LCA certification
The DOL certifies LCAs within seven business days. Schedule your consulate appointment in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth as soon as your LCA is certified so your start date aligns with your employer's project timelines and your visa validity period.

Find Graphic Designer JobsGraphic Designer E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Graphic Designer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles that support E-3 sponsorship. You can filter by job title and see which employers have a history of sponsoring work visas, saving you from applying to roles where sponsorship is unlikely or where the employer has never navigated the process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Graphic Designer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Graphic design qualifies as a specialty occupation when the position requires a bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a closely related field. Roles that accept any degree or treat the qualification as optional may not meet the standard. The job posting itself matters: 'degree required' language strengthens the case significantly over 'degree preferred.'
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian graphic designers?
The E-3 has a 10,500 annual cap that has never been reached, so there is no lottery and no random selection. The H-1B is subject to an oversubscribed lottery with a roughly 25 percent selection rate. For an Australian designer with a qualifying job offer, the E-3 is a far more reliable path because approval depends on your application, not chance.
Can I switch employers or go freelance while on an E-3 as a Graphic Designer?
Switching employers requires your new employer to file a fresh LCA with the DOL and you to obtain a new E-3 visa stamp before starting work, unless you are changing status from inside the U.S. Freelance or independent contract work is not permitted on an E-3 because the visa is tied to a specific employer relationship, not self-employment.
