Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as an Equipment Mechanic
Translate your Australian trade credentials formally
U.S. employers often don't recognize Australian Certificate III or IV trade qualifications at face value. Get a formal credential evaluation showing degree equivalency before applying, so your documents support the E-3 visa specialty occupation requirement from day one.
Target employers with existing LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data for companies that have filed LCAs for mechanic or maintenance technician roles. These employers already understand the E-3 process and won't need coaching on their obligations.
Clarify specialty occupation before accepting an offer
Not every equipment mechanic role qualifies under the E-3 specialty occupation definition. Before signing, confirm the job description explicitly requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field, not just general mechanical experience or a trade certificate.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for LCA and paperwork
Once you have an offer, Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from LCA submission through consulate appointment, so neither you nor your employer needs to decode DOL wage level determinations or DS-160 requirements independently.
Ask your employer about prevailing wage levels early
The DOL requires your offered wage to meet the prevailing wage for your role and location. If your employer sets compensation below the Level I or II threshold for your occupation, USCIS can deny the LCA, stalling your visa before it starts.
Understand that E-3 status requires continuous employment
If your equipment mechanic role ends, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer before your status lapses. Line up your next role before leaving, since the E-3 doesn't allow self-employment or independent contracting as bridge work.
E-3 Visa Equipment Mechanic: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find equipment mechanic jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for equipment mechanic roles where U.S. employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. Because the E-3 requires an employer-filed LCA, you need companies that already understand visa sponsorship obligations. Migrate Mate filters for those employers and surfaces roles compatible with the E-3 specialty occupation standard, saving you the guesswork of cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with Australian visa pathways.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an equipment mechanic role qualify as a specialty occupation for E-3 purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. A general trade position requiring only a Certificate III or hands-on experience typically doesn't qualify. To meet the E-3 specialty occupation standard, the job must require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific technical discipline, such as mechanical engineering or industrial technology. Roles involving advanced diagnostics, system design, or engineering oversight are more likely to qualify than straight maintenance work.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for equipment mechanic roles?
The E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and has no lottery, no annual cap, and no registration fee. The H-1B visa is subject to an annual cap of 85,000 and a random selection lottery, meaning you could apply and be rejected purely by chance. For an equipment mechanic with Australian citizenship, the E-3 is the more predictable path, provided your role and qualifications meet the specialty occupation definition.
Can my employer switch me from a different visa status to E-3 while I'm already in the U.S.?
Yes, a change of status to E-3 is possible from most valid nonimmigrant categories, including F-1 and H-1B, without leaving the country. Your employer files the LCA with the DOL and then submits a change of status petition with USCIS. The practical complication is that many equipment mechanic employers are unfamiliar with this route, so having documentation of the full process ready for your HR team speeds things up considerably.
