Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Field Engineer
Get your engineering credentials assessed early
Australian three-year engineering degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor's for E-3 purposes, but have a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator ready before you apply. Consulates occasionally request it.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Foreign Labor Application Gateway for certified LCAs by job title and state. Employers who have filed LCAs for field engineering roles before are far more likely to understand and repeat the sponsorship process.
Clarify the specialty occupation case before accepting
Field Engineer roles vary widely. Before signing an offer, confirm your employer can document that the specific position requires an engineering degree, not just technical experience. Generalist site roles with no degree requirement can fail E-3 eligibility at the consulate.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your LCA
The LCA must be certified by the DOL before your visa interview. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so your employer isn't navigating FLAG portal submissions and prevailing wage determinations alone.
Ask about worksite structure during the offer stage
Field engineers often rotate across client sites or project locations. Your LCA must list a prevailing wage tied to a specific worksite area, so clarify with your employer whether the role is tied to a headquarters address or follows project locations.
Prepare for nonimmigrant intent questions at the consulate
Consular officers assess whether you intend to return to Australia. Have clear answers about your Australian ties, the project timeline, and why the role is temporary. Field engineering contracts with defined project scopes strengthen your nonimmigrant intent case.
E-3 Visa Field Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Field Engineer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended way to search, as it filters specifically for E-3-eligible employers who have a history of sponsoring Australian professionals. Many field engineering roles are advertised without any mention of visa sponsorship, so searching a general job board and filtering manually is significantly less efficient than using a tool built around E-3 employer data.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Field Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It depends on how the role is defined by the employer. The E-3 requires the position to normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline. Roles requiring a mechanical, civil, electrical, or petroleum engineering degree typically qualify. Generalist technician or site supervisor roles that accept any technical background without a degree requirement often don't pass the specialty occupation test.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Field Engineer roles?
The E-3 is available year-round with no lottery and no annual cap, which means your employer can sponsor you at any point during the year rather than waiting for an April registration window. H-1B selection is random and capped at 85,000 per fiscal year. For Field Engineers with time-sensitive project start dates, the E-3's predictable timeline is a practical advantage over the H-1B lottery.
What happens to my E-3 status if a project ends or I change employers?
Your E-3 status is tied to your specific employer and LCA, not the project. If your engagement ends or you change employers, your new employer must file a fresh LCA and you'll need a new E-3 visa or a change of status. There's no grace period built into the E-3 for job transitions, so starting the new sponsorship process before your current role ends is the safest approach.
