Verify your Australian PT credentials transfer
U.S. employers need confidence your Australian bachelor's or master's degree maps to a specialty occupation. Have your transcript assessed by a NACES-approved evaluator before applying so hiring managers can confirm your credentials meet E-3 visa degree requirements without delays.
Target hospital systems with active E-3 histories
Large hospital networks and rehabilitation chains file LCAs regularly and understand the E-3 process. Filter your search on Migrate Mate by PT roles at employers with confirmed E-3 sponsorship history to avoid wasting time on clinics that have never sponsored a visa.
Clarify state licensure before your interview
You can't start work as a PT without a state license, and many employers won't extend an offer until you have one. Check whether your target state accepts the NPTE score from an overseas-trained applicant before you apply, since licensure timelines vary by state board.
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your offer
Your employer files the LCA with DOL certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for PT in that metro area. Ask HR to confirm the wage level assigned to your role before signing the offer, because a Level I wage can trigger additional scrutiny at the consulate.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the paperwork
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA submission, DS-160, and consulate preparation end-to-end. This prevents common filing errors that delay PT start dates, especially when your employer's HR team is unfamiliar with the E-3 process.
Request a detailed employment letter covering all E-3 requirements
Your consulate appointment depends on a letter from your employer specifying your job title, duties, degree requirement, start date, and offered wage. Ask HR to include the exact specialty occupation language DOL uses for physical therapists so the consular officer has no grounds to question classification.
E-3 Visa PT: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find PT jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters PT roles by employers with confirmed E-3 sponsorship history. Most general job boards don't distinguish between employers willing to file an LCA and those that won't, so you can spend weeks applying to clinics that have no process for sponsoring Australian candidates. Migrate Mate removes that guesswork.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a PT role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes. Physical therapy requires at minimum a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree in the U.S., and USCIS consistently recognizes PT as a specialty occupation. Australian applicants who hold a bachelor's or master's in physiotherapy typically satisfy this requirement, provided a credential evaluation confirms degree equivalency to a U.S. professional degree in the field.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian PTs?
The E-3 has a 10,500 annual allocation that has never been exhausted, so there's no lottery and no random exclusion risk. The H-1B visa subjects applicants to a lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate regardless of qualifications. For an Australian PT, the E-3 is the direct path: file once you have an offer, attend a consulate interview, and start work within weeks.
Can I change PT employers after I'm already working on an E-3?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new visa stamp endorsed for that employer before you can legally begin working for them. There's no portability provision under the E-3 the way there is for some H-1B holders, so plan for a processing gap of several weeks between roles if you're switching employers.
