Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Research And Development
Translate your Australian qualifications accurately
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 specialty occupation purposes. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-accredited evaluator before your interview to avoid consular complications.
Target employers with active R&D laboratories
Focus on companies that already run federally funded research programs or hold active DOL Labor Condition Applications for research scientist or engineer roles. These employers understand specialty occupation filings and won't need educating on E-3 mechanics.
Search R&D sponsorship roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter research and development positions by employers with verified E-3 sponsorship history. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles your LCA and visa paperwork so you can focus on negotiating your offer.
Confirm the role meets specialty occupation standards
Your job offer must require a specific degree field, not just a generic bachelor's. A research engineer role requiring a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering meets the standard. A vague 'science background preferred' posting likely won't survive consular scrutiny.
Start the LCA filing before signing anything
Your employer must file and receive DOL certification of the Labor Condition Application before you can proceed to your visa interview. Build at least two to three weeks of LCA processing time into your start-date negotiation with the hiring team.
Prepare a degree-to-role narrative for your consular interview
Consular officers assess whether your specific degree directly supports the R&D position. Write a concise explanation connecting your field of study to your job duties before your interview, especially if your degree title doesn't exactly match the role description.

Find Research And Development JobsResearch And Development E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find R&D jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search research and development roles filtered by employers who sponsor the E-3 visa. Standard job boards list open positions but rarely confirm visa sponsorship status, which means you can spend weeks applying before discovering an employer won't file. Migrate Mate surfaces sponsorship-confirmed R&D openings for Australian nationals specifically.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for R&D roles?
Both visas require a specialty occupation and employer sponsorship, but the E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap, meaning Australian R&D professionals can apply at any point in the year. The H-1B is subject to an annual lottery with a roughly 25% selection rate for most applicants. For R&D roles, the E-3 also processes faster because there's no cap-subject filing season to navigate.
Does my Australian research degree satisfy U.S. specialty occupation requirements?
Yes, provided your degree is in a field directly relevant to the R&D role. A three-year Australian bachelor's in chemistry, biology, engineering, or computer science is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree. A NACES-accredited credential evaluation formalises this equivalency and is advisable if your degree title or institution isn't immediately recognisable to a U.S. consular officer.
Can I switch R&D employers while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but the process restarts from the beginning with each new employer. Your new employer must file a fresh Labor Condition Application with the DOL and you'll need to obtain a new E-3 visa stamp, either through a U.S. consulate or, in some cases, through a change of status filing with USCIS if you're already in the United States. There's no portability provision equivalent to what exists under the H-1B.
