Confirm your degree meets specialty occupation standards
U.S. consular officers assess whether your Australian social work degree satisfies the specialty occupation requirement. A BSW or bachelor's in psychology qualifies, but a general arts degree with social work units may not. Get a credential evaluation before applying.
Target employers with active DOL filing history
Nonprofit agencies, county health departments, and hospital systems regularly file Labor Condition Applications for case managers. Search DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data to identify which organisations have sponsored E-3 visa workers in social services roles before.
Request your job offer letter before the LCA is filed
Your employer can't file the LCA with DOL until they have a specific role, wage, and worksite confirmed. Ask your hiring manager for a written offer letter detailing your title, salary, and start location so the LCA filing isn't delayed after you've accepted.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to coordinate your LCA and consulate prep
Case manager roles often involve multiple worksites or contract placements, which complicate the LCA. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles the employer documentation, DOL submission, and consulate preparation so nothing slips between your offer and your visa appointment.
Prepare NASW membership or state licensure documentation early
Some consular officers ask for evidence of professional standing alongside your degree. Having your NASW membership card or evidence of your state board licensure application ready strengthens your specialty occupation case at the interview.
Clarify whether your role is direct service or supervisory
USCIS distinguishes between entry-level case management and clinical or supervisory roles when evaluating specialty occupation status. A job description emphasising clinical assessment, treatment planning, or team supervision creates a stronger E-3 case than one focused solely on administrative intake tasks.
E-3 Visa Social Work Case Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Social Work Case Manager jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship, so it filters for employers already open to the visa. Standard job boards don't let you filter by visa type, which means hours of manual research. Migrate Mate surfaces case management roles at nonprofits, health systems, and government agencies that match the E-3 requirements.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Social Work Case Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in social work, psychology, counseling, or a directly related field. Roles that accept any degree, or where lived experience substitutes for academic qualifications, can fail the specialty occupation test. Your job offer letter and the employer's job posting both need to specify the degree requirement explicitly.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Social Work Case Manager roles?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens but has no annual lottery, no cap, and can be filed at any time of year. The H-1B visa is subject to an annual lottery with roughly 25% selection odds, meaning you could wait years before getting a slot. For Australian case managers, the E-3 is a far more reliable path since approval isn't left to chance.
Can I change employers or agencies while on an E-3 as a case manager?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp before re-entering the U.S. if yours has expired. If your current visa stamp is still valid and you're already inside the country, you can start with the new employer once the LCA is certified, though consular processing rules apply at your next international departure.
