Frame your Australian degree for U.S. employers
A three-year Australian bachelor's in computer science or engineering is accepted as equivalent to a four-year U.S. degree for E-3 purposes. Explicitly note this equivalency in your resume and cover letter so hiring managers don't screen you out prematurely.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Not every company that hires interns has filed a Labor Condition Application before. Prioritise mid-size and enterprise technology firms whose DOL filings confirm they already understand the E-3 process for specialty occupation roles.
Search specifically for E-3 sponsorship on Migrate Mate
Generic job boards don't filter by visa type. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 job search to surface technology internship roles at employers who have already demonstrated willingness to sponsor Australian nationals.
Clarify specialty occupation status before accepting an offer
Internships titled 'general tech assistant' or 'IT support intern' may not meet the DOL's specialty occupation threshold. Confirm with the employer that your role requires a specific technical degree, not just any bachelor's degree, before the LCA is filed.
Ask your employer about E-Verify enrollment early
Some U.S. states and federal contractors require employers to be enrolled in E-Verify before onboarding any sponsored worker. Raise this with HR before your start date so it doesn't delay your I-9 verification or create a gap in authorised employment.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service after receiving your offer
Once you have a signed offer letter, Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles your LCA submission to the DOL, visa application paperwork, and consulate appointment preparation, so you can focus on the role rather than the bureaucratic steps.

Find Technology Intern JobsTechnology Intern E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Technology Intern jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for technology internship roles where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. Standard job boards don't filter by visa type, so you'll spend significant time cold-screening employers. Migrate Mate surfaces roles at companies with documented sponsorship history, reducing that guesswork considerably.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Technology Intern role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It can, but the job description has to specify that a bachelor's degree in a particular technical field is required, not just preferred. Internships framed as general support roles often don't meet the DOL threshold. Roles tied to software engineering, data analysis, cybersecurity, or systems architecture with a stated degree requirement are far more likely to qualify.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian technology interns?
The E-3 has a dedicated 10,500-visa annual allocation that has never been fully used, so there is no lottery and no random selection risk. The H-1B runs an oversubscribed annual lottery where most applicants are not selected. For an Australian national, the E-3 is the more reliable path for a technology internship, with faster timelines and no cap-related uncertainty.
Can I change employers or extend my internship while on an E-3?
Yes to both, but each requires a fresh LCA and updated visa documentation. Switching to a new employer before your current E-3 period ends means your new employer must file a new LCA with the DOL and you'll need an updated visa stamp if you travel internationally. Extensions within the same company follow the same LCA renewal process and can be filed before your current period expires.
