Electrical Systems Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical systems engineer in New York?
The standard path begins with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program, followed by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and accumulating qualifying experience before sitting for the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam administered through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. Many New York employers in utilities, transit, and defense require or strongly prefer a licensed Professional Engineer. Gaining experience with power systems, defense electronics, or rail infrastructure common to New York's major employers accelerates advancement.
How much do electrical systems engineers make in New York?
Electrical systems engineers in New York earn a median of about $119,010 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,870 for the lowest 10% to over $168,820 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical systems engineers in New York?
Employers hiring electrical systems engineers in New York right now include Arcadis, Atlas Copco, and New York Independent System Operator, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of defense contractors on Long Island, large utilities in the metro area, and the MTA's ongoing capital programs means demand is spread across both private and public-sector organizations.
Which New York cities have the most electrical systems engineer jobs?
Albany, New York, and Rochester are the New York cities with the most electrical systems engineer openings. New York City and Long Island drive the largest share through defense contractors, Con Edison, and the MTA's extensive rail and transit infrastructure projects, while the Albany area draws demand from state energy agencies, utility operations, and advanced manufacturing facilities in the Capital Region.
Are there remote electrical systems engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 10% of electrical systems engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of systems design, testing, and site-specific integration work. The portions of the role most compatible with remote or hybrid arrangements are simulation modeling, documentation, and systems requirements analysis rather than lab or field work.
How can I get hired as a electrical systems engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a full-time associate or junior engineer role at one of New York's large defense or utility employers, many of which run structured new-graduate rotational programs. Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin on Long Island recruit directly from New York engineering schools, and Con Edison offers entry-level engineering associate roles for recent graduates. A completed FE exam registration through the New York State Education Department and a capstone project or internship in power systems or avionics gives candidates a clear edge over applicants without documented hands-on work.
