Energy Consultant Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an energy consultant in Illinois?
Most energy consultants in Illinois begin with a bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, business, or energy management, then pursue professional credentials recognized by Illinois employers. The Certified Energy Manager and Certified Energy Auditor designations from the Association of Energy Engineers are the most widely requested in Illinois job listings. Illinois does not require a state-issued license specific to energy consulting, but registered professional engineer credentials strengthen candidacy for utility and municipal roles.
Which companies hire energy consultants in Illinois?
Employers hiring energy consultants in Illinois right now include Sargent & Lundy, Trelevate, and Guidehouse, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's large investor-owned utilities and the state's active energy efficiency programs administered through the Illinois Shines and Illinois Energy Now initiatives generate consistent consultant demand across both the private and public sectors.
Which Illinois cities have the most energy consultant jobs?
Chicago, Aurora, and Tinley Park have the most energy consultant openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the largest share of postings given its concentration of corporate headquarters, major utilities, and commercial real estate clients, while Naperville and Rockford attract roles connected to suburban municipal energy programs and regional industrial facilities that maintain in-house or contracted consulting functions.
Are there remote energy consultant jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many technical fields, since much of an energy consultant's analytical and advisory work can be performed off-site. About 100% of energy consultant openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-heavy nature of energy modeling, report writing, and client strategy work. On-site audits and utility coordination still require local travel, but the research and recommendations phases are frequently done remotely.
How can I get hired as an energy consultant in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for energy analyst or sustainability coordinator roles at Illinois utilities or large consulting firms, where structured rotational programs and project-based mentorship are common. Exelon and Ameren Illinois both hire associates and program analysts for entry-level positions tied to efficiency programs. Pursuing the Certified Energy Auditor credential while in a related role such as facilities coordinator, mechanical engineer, or building manager builds the hands-on background that Illinois employers look for in junior consultant candidates.
Where can I find and apply to energy consultant jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to energy consultant jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and target location within Illinois, and apply directly to each position.
