Energy Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a energy in Iowa?
The path into energy work in Iowa depends on your specialty, but most technical roles require at minimum an associate or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, energy systems, or a related field. Electricians and utility technicians typically need licensure through the Iowa Department of Labor's electrical licensing program. Wind energy roles often require completion of a technical training program at a community college such as Iowa Lakes Community College, which runs one of the country's most recognized wind turbine technology programs.
Which companies hire energys in Iowa?
Employers hiring energys in Iowa right now include Deloitte, The Weitz Company, and Resource Innovations, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's energy sector is anchored by large investor-owned utilities and wind developers that maintain consistent year-round hiring across operations, engineering, and project management roles.
Which Iowa cities have the most energy jobs?
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Dubuque have the most energy job openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives volume as the state's corporate and utility headquarters hub, while Cedar Rapids and Ames benefit from proximity to major transmission infrastructure and Iowa State University's energy research institutions, pulling in both private employers and public-sector roles.
Are there remote energy jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're limited. Much of Iowa's energy work is field-based and on-site, covering turbine maintenance, grid inspection, and plant operations that cannot be done remotely. About 55% of energy openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with remote roles concentrated in project development, regulatory compliance, and energy data analysis positions where physical site presence is not required daily.
How can I get hired as a energy in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is enrolling in Iowa Lakes Community College's wind energy technology program, which places graduates directly with Iowa-based turbine operators and developers. MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy both run apprenticeship and associate technician tracks for candidates without full professional experience. Entry-level roles with titles like utility technician, field service associate, or energy analyst are common starting points, and earning a NABCEP certification or completing an OSHA 10 course gives candidates a clear competitive edge with Iowa hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to energy jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to energy jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your background and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
