Job Description:
The Role
We’re hiring a strategic and technically strong engineering leader to lead Portfolio Construction technology platforms within Fidelity Asset Management Solutions (FAMS). This role includes direct people management responsibility for approximately 9 software engineers while providing technical and execution leadership across multiple engineering delivery teams.
This role requires a leader with proven experience building and developing high-performing engineering teams combined with deep modern software engineering expertise. Just as importantly, the ideal candidate must have hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, and similar technologies in real engineering environments.
This is a core requirement for the role — the successful candidate will be expected to lead adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices, coach engineers on modern AI development workflows, and accelerate developer productivity across the organization.
You will partner closely with product, architecture, and investment technology leaders to deliver scalable, resilient, and high-impact solutions supporting multi-asset investing and portfolio construction capabilities.
This is an ideal opportunity for a leader who is passionate about engineering excellence, talent development, AI-driven software engineering transformation, and building modern investment technology platforms.
The Expertise and Skills You Bring
- Proven experience leading and developing high-performing engineering teams, including direct management of approximately 8–10 software engineers.
- Deep technical expertise across modern engineering stacks, cloud-native platforms, and enterprise-scale software delivery.
- Hands-on experience using and driving adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, and similar technologies.
- Ability to influence technical direction, partner effectively with product leadership, and translate strategy into scalable business solutions.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and coaching skills with a passion for engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
The Value You Deliver
- Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of software engineers while fostering a strong culture of accountability and innovation.
- Drive delivery of strategic technology initiatives supporting portfolio construction and multi-asset investment capabilities.
- Accelerate engineering productivity and quality through adoption of AI-enabled software development practices and tools.
- Partner closely with product and technology leaders to align engineering execution with business priorities and client outcomes.
- Deliver scalable, resilient, and high-quality technology solutions using modern engineering practices and cloud-native architectures.
The Team
Within Fidelity Asset Management Solutions (FAMS), our technology organization builds and supports the platforms that power portfolio construction, asset allocation, analytics, and risk management across a broad range of multi-asset investment solutions.
Our engineers develop scalable, cloud-native applications and services supporting investment professionals across the full investment lifecycle. Teams leverage modern technologies including Java, Angular, Kafka, Oracle, and cloud-native architectures to deliver high-impact investment technology solutions.
FAMS is also making a significant strategic investment in AI-enabled engineering practices and developer productivity transformation. We are actively adopting tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, and other emerging AI technologies to modernize software development, improve quality, and accelerate delivery across engineering teams.

Currently, some roles and locations require 100% onsite presence, while others require less. Onsite expectations are likely to evolve as the rollout continues. This transition does not apply to fully remote roles.
The base salary range for this position is $126,000-255,000 USD per year. Placement in the range will vary based on job responsibilities and scope, geographic location, candidate’s relevant experience, and other factors.
Base salary is only part of the total compensation package. Depending on the position and eligibility requirements, the offer package may also include bonus or other variable compensation.
We offer a wide range of benefits to meet your evolving needs and help you live your best life at work and at home. These benefits include comprehensive health care coverage and emotional well-being support, market-leading retirement, generous paid time off and parental leave, charitable giving employee match program, and educational assistance including student loan repayment, tuition reimbursement, and learning resources to develop your career. Engineering Director Jobs in Boston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a engineering director job in Boston?
Target Boston's strongest hiring sectors: biotech and life sciences along the Longwood and Kendall Square corridors, enterprise software in the Seaport, and defense and aerospace firms north and south of the city. Candidates who combine a strong delivery record with familiarity in regulated or research-driven environments stand out locally. Prioritize companies in Series B and later stages, as well as established medtech and defense contractors who hire engineering directors regularly.
Which companies hire engineering directors in Boston?
Companies currently hiring engineering directors in Boston include PwC, Flywire, and Klaviyo, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Boston's engineering director market draws heavily from its research hospital systems, established biotech firms, and a dense layer of venture-backed software companies that have scaled past the startup stage.
Are there remote engineering director jobs in Boston?
Yes, though remote availability is limited for this role since engineering directors typically manage on-site teams and cross-functional delivery cycles. About 25% of engineering director openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common. The most remote-friendly subset tends to be platform or infrastructure-focused roles at software companies headquartered in the Seaport or Cambridge.
How can I get a engineering director job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a senior engineering manager role at one of Boston's mid-size biotech or software companies, then building upward. Employers in the Seaport's growth-stage software scene and Cambridge's life sciences cluster often promote from within or hire managers ready to step up. Demonstrating ownership of a full product or infrastructure cycle, not just team management, is what distinguishes candidates making this move locally.
Which industries hire the most engineering directors in Boston?
Boston engineering director roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Consulting & Professional Services, and Insurance, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Boston's position as a global hub for life sciences research, a growing center for enterprise software, and a longstanding base for defense and government contracting means sustained, year-round demand for senior engineering leadership across those sectors.
