SMT Engineering Supervisor
Job Purpose:
The SMT Engineering Supervisor provides technical leadership, mentorship, and process direction to the SMT Process Engineering and SMT Programming teams within our Integrated Manufacturing Solutions (IMS) facility. This role focuses entirely on technical execution, rapid New Product Introduction (NPI), process optimization, and customer-facing engineering support. The ideal candidate ensures robust CAD-to-machine program translation, designs repeatable thermal and mechanical manufacturing processes, and drives continuous yield improvement across a highly diverse, high-mix contract manufacturing portfolio, without direct responsibility for floor production operations.
Job Description and Responsibilities:
- Supervise, mentor, and develop the SMT Process Engineering and Programming personnel, fostering a collaborative, data-driven technical culture.
- Manage and prioritize engineering deliverables to support a fast-paced IMS environment, balancing active floor troubleshooting with tight NPI launch schedules.
- Establish and track engineering-specific KPIs, including NPI launch right-the-first-time (RTT) rates, programming cycle times, and the speed/accuracy of Engineering Change Orders (ECO).
- Enforce optimization standards for machine balancing, component placement sequencing, and feeder setups to optimize line throughput.
- Standardize SPI (Solder Paste Inspection) and AOI (Automated Optical Inspection) programming thresholds, ensuring the programming team minimizes false-call rates while securing robust defect-escape.
- Develop and standardize robust reflow profiling guidelines (e.g., leaded, lead-free, low-temperature) and stencil design standards (including step-stencils and nano-coatings) tailored to varied customer specifications.
- Direct the engineering team in designing and validating custom tooling, carrier plates, and support fixtures necessary to maintain board coplanarity through high-temperature processing.
- Lead complex, deep-dive root-cause investigations into systemic or high-cost assembly defects (e.g., voiding, component cracking, or solder balling) using advanced methodologies (DOEs, Six Sigma, 8D).
- Own and update the technical documentation stack, including Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Control Plans, and specialized Engineering Work Instructions.
- Oversee the technical NPI workflow, ensuring that Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) guidelines are rigorously applied by the team to customer designs before they hit the production floor.
- Serve as the technical point of escalation for customer engineering teams, translating customer product requirements into repeatable SMT manufacturing processes.
Skill set and experience:
- Manage workload, schedule management and all personnel documentation, shifts, overtime, and vacation requests.
- A customer-focused supervisor with demonstrated ability to schedule, forecast and meet deadlines.
- A seasoned, experienced leader who can select, teach, coach and mentor a workforce to support quality-driven, customer focused operations.
- Review current manufacturing processes, evaluate efficiency and gap analysis. Create and implement improvements and clear documentation of work instructions.
Qualification and Other requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering is preferred.
- Minimum 5–7 years of advanced hands-on engineering experience within an SMT electronics manufacturing environment.
- At least 2 years of experience leading technical projects, mentoring junior engineers/programmers, or acting as a team lead/supervisor.
- Direct, verifiable experience working in an Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) or Integrated Manufacturing Solutions (IMS) contract manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Deep familiarity with IPC-A-610, IPC-7525 (Stencil Design), and J-STD-001 standards.
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt is a strong plus.
- Must be able to communicate in both written and spoken English.

Tips for Your Engineering Supervisor Job Search
Quantify your team leadership outcomes
Hiring managers for engineering supervisor roles want to see scope and results, not just duties. List team size, project budgets you managed, and measurable improvements you drove, like reduced downtime or faster production cycles.
Tailor your resume to the discipline
Electrical, civil, and mechanical supervisory roles have different credential expectations. Align your resume's technical skills section to the specific engineering discipline in each posting, including relevant certifications like PE licensure or OSHA 30.
Filter openings by shift type and site
Many engineering supervisor roles require on-site presence on rotating or overnight shifts. Check job postings for shift requirements before applying so you target roles that genuinely fit your schedule and commute.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists engineering supervisor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a technical leadership interview
Interviewers typically probe how you handle underperforming team members, manage safety incidents, and balance production targets with quality standards. Prepare specific examples that show both your technical judgment and your people management decisions.
Negotiate beyond base pay in your offer
Engineering supervisor offers often include shift differentials, on-call pay, and tool or equipment allowances that are negotiable. Ask explicitly about these components before accepting so you understand the full compensation package.
Engineering Supervisor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most engineering supervisors?
The companies hiring the most engineering supervisors right now include Quanta Infrastructure Solutions, Dematic, and Starbucks, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Michigan, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially active in manufacturing, utilities, and infrastructure sectors.
How many engineering supervisor jobs are remote?
About 10% of engineering supervisor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the largely site-dependent nature of the role. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote flexibility include engineering program management, quality assurance oversight, and roles within software-driven or controls engineering disciplines.
How do you become an engineering supervisor?
Start by gaining several years of hands-on technical experience in your engineering discipline so you understand the work you will eventually oversee. Build a record of taking ownership on projects, mentoring junior engineers, and volunteering for cross-functional coordination tasks. Pursue relevant certifications like OSHA 30 or a PE license if your field values them. When you apply, emphasize specific examples of directing others, resolving technical problems under pressure, and meeting production or quality targets.
Can you get an engineering supervisor job with little experience?
Some employers hire candidates into associate or junior supervisor roles if they have a relevant engineering degree and demonstrated technical competence, even without prior supervisory titles. Focus your applications on smaller facilities or newer operations where teams are lean and engineers take on leadership responsibilities earlier. Highlight any project lead, team lead, or interim lead experience you have, and be specific about the number of people you coordinated and the outcomes you delivered.
What does the engineering supervisor interview process look like?
Most engineering supervisor interviews begin with a recruiter screen focused on your background and technical discipline, followed by a panel interview with the hiring manager and one or more senior engineers or operations leaders. Expect scenario-based questions about managing safety incidents, handling underperforming team members, and balancing competing project deadlines. Some employers add a site tour or a practical assessment where you review a process problem and explain how you would address it.
Where can I find and apply to engineering supervisor jobs?
You can find and apply to engineering supervisor jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your engineering discipline, experience level, and location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
