Family Counselor Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a family counselor in Illinois?
To become a licensed family counselor in Illinois, you must earn a master's degree in counseling, marriage and family therapy, social work, or a closely related field, then apply for licensure through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. The most common credential is the Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, which requires completing supervised clinical hours and passing the National Counselor Examination. Many employers also value coursework in family systems theory and trauma-informed practice.
Which companies hire family counselors in Illinois?
Employers hiring family counselors in Illinois right now include Blue Rose Consulting Group, Brightpoint, and Magellan Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of October 2026. Illinois's large public-sector agencies, nonprofit community mental health organizations, and integrated hospital systems together account for the bulk of consistent, full-time openings across the state.
Which Illinois cities have the most family counselor jobs?
Belleville, Great Lakes, and Illinois are the Illinois cities with the most family counselor openings. Chicago drives the largest share because of its concentration of hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and nonprofit behavioral health agencies, while Rockford and Springfield support active hiring through regional medical centers, DCFS field offices, and community mental health boards that serve their surrounding downstate populations.
Are there remote family counselor jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're limited. Family counseling is largely a relational, session-based role that many employers still fill on-site or in a hybrid capacity. About 0% of family counselor openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of October 2026, reflecting ongoing telehealth adoption since the pandemic. Outpatient counseling and case consultation functions are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid scheduling, while residential, school-based, and crisis-response positions remain in person.
How can I get hired as a family counselor in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a post-graduate supervised internship or associate-level clinician role at an Illinois community mental health center or DCFS-contracted agency, where you can accumulate the supervised hours required for full licensure. Organizations such as Thresholds and Gateway Foundation offer structured associate-level positions designed for new graduates. Moving into a family counselor role from a case manager, residential counselor, or crisis intervention position at one of these agencies is a common and well-recognized lateral path. Completing your Illinois mandated reporter training and maintaining a clean background check ahead of applications gives candidates a practical edge.
