Family Medicine Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a family medicine in California?
To practice family medicine in California, you must hold a valid physician and surgeon license issued by the Medical Board of California, which requires graduating from an accredited medical school, completing an accredited family medicine residency, and passing the USMLE or COMLEX licensing exams. Most California employers also expect board certification through the American Board of Family Medicine. International medical graduates must meet additional Medical Board of California requirements before licensure.
How much do family medicines make in California?
Family medicines in California earn a median of about $252,010 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,510 for the lowest 10% to over $475,480 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire family medicines in California?
Employers hiring family medicines in California right now include Sutter Health, CommonSpirit Health, and The Permanente Medical Group, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and its extensive network of federally qualified health centers, nonprofit integrated systems, and large multispecialty groups means that openings are spread well beyond the major metros and into rural and underserved areas statewide.
Which California cities have the most family medicine jobs?
The California cities with the most family medicine openings are Vacaville, Woodland, and Crescent City. Los Angeles and San Diego drive volume through their large hospital systems and community health networks, while Bay Area demand is anchored by integrated group practices and academic medical centers that maintain continuous recruiting pipelines for primary care physicians across their regional campuses.
Are there remote family medicine jobs in California?
Yes, but they are rare. Family medicine is a hands-on clinical role that almost always requires an in-person patient encounter, so fully remote positions represent a small fraction of the market. About 2% of family medicine openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve telehealth-only panels, chronic disease management follow-ups, or administrative medical director functions rather than full-scope primary care.
How can I get hired as a family medicine in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to California residency-to-employment pipeline programs at large systems such as Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, or county hospital networks, which regularly hire physicians completing their family medicine residency at affiliated California training sites. New graduates can also target federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics, where National Health Service Corps loan repayment incentives make these roles competitive entry points. A current Medical Board of California license and ABFM board eligibility are the credentials that open the most doors at the entry level.
Where can I find and apply to family medicine jobs in California?
You can find and apply to family medicine jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find the roles that match your credentials and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
