How do you become a family medicine in Texas?
To practice family medicine in Texas you must obtain a Texas Medical License through the Texas Medical Board after completing medical school and an accredited three-year family medicine residency. The Texas Medical Board requires passing USMLE or COMLEX steps, submitting verified training and background documentation, and meeting continuing education requirements for renewal. Board certification through the American Board of Family Medicine strengthens competitiveness with Texas employers.
How much do family medicines make in Texas?
Family medicines in Texas earn a median of about $235,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $75,150 for the lowest 10% to over $414,010 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire family medicines in Texas?
Employers hiring family medicines in Texas right now include Baylor Scott & White Health, Optum, and CHRISTUS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large integrated health systems and its growing network of federally qualified health centers generate particularly consistent openings across urban, suburban, and rural communities throughout the state.
Which Texas cities have the most family medicine jobs?
Houston, Fort Worth, and Dallas have the most family medicine openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth drive the highest volume due to their large integrated health systems and dense population, while San Antonio's strong military-affiliated and VA-connected healthcare infrastructure creates steady demand, and secondary markets like Austin and El Paso are growing as their health systems expand primary care capacity.
Are there remote family medicine jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 1% of family medicine openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that most family medicine work is hands-on and requires in-person patient care. The portions most compatible with remote work are telemedicine-specific roles, chronic disease management consultations, and utilization review positions that do not require direct examination.

The most realistic entry path for new family medicine graduates in Texas is applying directly to residency-to-employment pipeline programs at large health systems such as Baylor Scott & White, UT Health, and Texas Children's Health Plan, which actively recruit physicians completing residency. Community health centers and FQHCs across Texas frequently hire new graduates, offering loan repayment incentives in underserved areas. Securing your Texas Medical Board license and ABFM board eligibility before applying gives you a strong competitive edge.
