Tips for Your Family Medicine Job Search
Tailor your CV for outpatient versus inpatient
Family medicine employers screen for care setting fit before anything else. List your ambulatory volume, panel size, and any hospitalist rotations separately so recruiters can immediately see where your experience lands without reading between the lines.
Highlight your full scope of practice
Rural and federally qualified health center openings often require obstetrics, minor procedures, or behavioral health integration. Call out any procedural certifications, colposcopy training, or integrated care experience explicitly rather than burying them in a generic clinical summary.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists family medicine openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by board certification requirement
Some positions accept board-eligible candidates, while others require active ABFM certification. Sort or filter by this before applying so you don't spend time on roles you can't start until your exam results clear, especially if you're newly residency-trained.
Prepare a clinical philosophy statement before interviews
Panel and committee interviews for family medicine positions frequently open with a question about your approach to continuity of care or chronic disease management. Draft a two-minute response grounded in specific patient outcomes from your practice before your first interview call.
Negotiate call schedule before signing
Call burden varies widely across family medicine practices and rarely appears in job postings. Ask for the current call schedule, after-hours coverage expectations, and how call is distributed before you receive a written offer, not after, so you can compare roles accurately.
Family Medicine Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most family medicines?
The companies hiring the most family medicines right now include Ascension, Sanford Health, and CommonSpirit Health, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Minnesota, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Community health centers and large regional health systems tend to post the highest volumes of openings on an ongoing basis.
How many family medicine jobs are remote?
About 1% of family medicine openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with telehealth-only roles accounting for most of that share. Direct patient care positions remain predominantly in-person, but roles focused on chronic disease management, behavioral health follow-up, and post-acute care coordination are most likely to offer remote or hybrid scheduling options.
How do you become a family medicine?
You complete a four-year medical school program earning an MD or DO degree, followed by a three-year accredited family medicine residency. After residency, you sit for the American Board of Family Medicine certification exam. You then obtain a state medical license in the state where you plan to practice, secure your DEA registration, and apply to open positions in your preferred care setting.
How do you get hired in family medicine with little experience?
Most entry-level family medicine positions are designed for newly residency-trained physicians, so completing your residency is itself the primary qualifier. New graduates should emphasize their continuity clinic volume, any fellowship-level training, and procedural breadth. Federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics often prioritize candidates willing to serve underserved populations and are more open to physicians without post-residency attending experience.
What does the family medicine interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a phone or video screening with a recruiter or medical director, followed by an on-site visit that includes a tour of the practice, meetings with clinical staff, and a panel interview with department leadership. You'll likely discuss your clinical philosophy, call availability, and patient panel expectations. Some health systems also request references or a credentialing packet before extending a formal offer.
Where can I find and apply to family medicine jobs?
You can find and apply to family medicine jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from health systems, private practices, community health centers, and telehealth providers across the United States. Find roles that match your specialty, experience level, and preferred care setting, then apply directly to each listing without needing to go through a third party.
