Neurologist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a neurologist in California?
To practice as a neurologist in California, you must hold an active physician and surgeon license issued by the Medical Board of California, which requires completing medical school, an ACGME-accredited neurology residency, and passing the USMLE steps. Board certification through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is strongly preferred by California employers. Fellowship training in a subspecialty such as epilepsy or vascular neurology adds a competitive edge in this market.
How much do neurologists make in California?
Neurologists in California earn a median of about $357,080 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $104,320 for the lowest 10% to over $357,080 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire neurologists in California?
Employers hiring neurologists in California right now include The Permanente Medical Group, CommonSpirit Health, and Loma Linda University Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large academic health systems, regional medical groups, and Kaiser Permanente's integrated network means neurologist openings appear consistently across both urban academic centers and suburban outpatient settings.
Which California cities have the most neurologist jobs?
Loma Linda, Manteca, and Oakland have the most neurologist openings in California. Los Angeles anchors the list given the density of academic medical centers and community hospitals serving one of the largest metropolitan populations in the country, while San Francisco and San Diego benefit from world-class research institutions, large integrated systems, and substantial outpatient neurology demand driven by their growing and aging populations.
Are there remote neurologist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of neurologist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on clinical nature of most neurology practice. The portion of the role most amenable to remote work is teleneurology, which has grown in stroke consultation, outpatient follow-up, and neuropsychological evaluation, particularly for health systems serving rural parts of California.
How can I get hired as a neurologist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for physicians new to independent neurology practice in California is securing a first attending role through residency recruitment pipelines at large California health systems, including those run by Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and the University of California system, which actively recruit graduating residents. Candidates without independent experience should target hospitalist neurology or stroke coverage roles, which accept new attendings with residency training. Holding an active California medical license and ABPN board eligibility before graduation gives applicants a meaningful advantage.
Where can I find and apply to neurologist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to neurologist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Find the roles that fit your specialization and experience level and apply directly from each listing.
