Most Virginia employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or information technology, though candidates from bootcamps and self-taught backgrounds are regularly hired when their portfolio is strong. For roles with federal contractors in Northern Virginia, obtaining a security clearance early significantly broadens your options.
How much do front end software engineers make in Virginia?
Front end software engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $136,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,350 for the lowest 10% to over $211,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire front end software engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring front end software engineers in Virginia right now include Booz Allen Hamilton, Capital One, and Eiden Systems Consulting, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal contractors and cloud-services firms means a notable share of these openings sit inside large defense and government IT organizations alongside commercial technology companies.
Which Virginia cities have the most front end software engineer jobs?
The cities with the most front end software engineer openings in Virginia are Arlington, Reston, and Chantilly. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and cloud providers anchored around the Washington metro corridor, while Richmond draws hiring from financial services firms and state government technology offices, and Hampton Roads adds demand from military installations and their supporting contractors.
