General Contractor Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a general contractor in Texas?
Most general contractors in Texas work under registrations issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, though licensing requirements vary by project type and municipality. Many employers require a degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field, alongside field experience. Earning an OSHA 30-hour certification and learning project management software are practical early steps that Texas employers consistently look for in candidates at every level.
How much do general contractors make in Texas?
General contractors in Texas earn a median of about $101,470 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,040 for the lowest 10% to over $166,800 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire general contractors in Texas?
Employers hiring general contractors in Texas right now include Evans General Contractors, Signal Energy Constructors, and 5M Farms, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's sustained construction boom across commercial, industrial, and residential sectors means large regional and national builders maintain consistent hiring pipelines throughout the state.
Which Texas cities have the most general contractor jobs?
Floydada, Dallas, and Seminole have the most general contractor openings in Texas. Houston's energy and medical complex construction drives high volume there, Dallas-Fort Worth's rapid commercial and mixed-use expansion fuels demand across that metro, and Austin's continued tech campus and multifamily residential growth keeps that market consistently active for experienced builders.
Are there remote general contractor jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. General contractor work is fundamentally site-dependent, so most roles require consistent on-site presence. About 0% of general contractor openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve pre-construction planning, estimating, or project coordination functions rather than active field supervision.
How can I get hired as a general contractor in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a construction superintendent assistant or project engineer role at a mid-size Texas commercial builder, where structured mentorship is common. Large Texas homebuilders like D.R. Horton and Lennar run associate superintendent programs designed for candidates without prior construction management experience. Earning an OSHA 30-hour card and completing a construction management certificate from a Texas community college gives early applicants a concrete edge in competitive entry-level screens.
Where can I find and apply to general contractor jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to general contractor jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
