Most California employers expect a bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communications, or fine arts, typically from a four-year program at a school such as CalArts, ArtCenter College of Design, or a UC or CSU campus. A strong portfolio demonstrating real project work carries as much weight as formal credentials in most California hiring decisions.

Graphic designers in California earn a median of about $75,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,190 for the lowest 10% to over $129,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
