Green Card Biomedical Engineer Jobs
Biomedical Engineer roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which requires employers to document recruitment efforts before filing an I-140 immigrant petition. Medical device companies, hospital systems, and research institutions regularly sponsor foreign engineers, making this one of the more accessible pathways to permanent residency for advanced-degree professionals in the life sciences.

Document your degree equivalency early
PERM filings require USCIS to confirm your foreign engineering degree meets U.S. equivalency standards. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before your employer starts the labor certification process to avoid delays.
Target employers with active PERM filings
Medical device manufacturers, hospital-affiliated research centers, and FDA-regulated biotech firms file PERM applications most often for Biomedical Engineers. Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with confirmed green card sponsorship history in this occupation.
Verify your role meets EB-2 specialty occupation requirements
EB-2 requires a U.S. master's degree or foreign equivalent in biomedical engineering or a directly related field. If your degree is in a broader engineering discipline, your employer's attorney will need to establish the connection explicitly in the I-140 petition.
Confirm your employer's prevailing wage before accepting an offer
DOL requires your offered wage to meet or exceed the prevailing wage for your job zone and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level I through Level IV wages for your specific SOC code before negotiating your compensation.
Understand the PERM recruitment timeline before your start date
DOL requires employers to complete a mandatory recruitment period of at least 30 days before filing a PERM application. Your employer can't begin that clock until they have a specific job offer in place, so ask about their internal process timeline upfront.
Check whether your employer is E-Verify enrolled
Employers sponsoring foreign workers through PERM are not automatically required to use E-Verify, but many large healthcare and defense-contractor employers are. If you're switching from OPT or another status, E-Verify enrollment affects how quickly your work authorization can be confirmed on day one.
Green Card Biomedical Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Biomedical Engineer roles commonly qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Biomedical Engineer positions qualify for EB-2 sponsorship because they typically require at least a master's degree in biomedical engineering or a closely related field. Roles that accept a bachelor's degree with several years of experience can qualify under EB-3 as a professional or skilled worker. The specific tier depends on the minimum requirements the employer sets in the PERM job description, not just your own credentials.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for a Biomedical Engineer?
H-1B visa sponsorship is temporary, capped at 85,000 new visas annually, and subject to a lottery for most applicants. PERM-based green card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 has no annual numerical cap at the petition level, though visa availability by country of birth can create wait times for nationals from high-demand countries like India and China. Green card sponsorship leads to permanent residency rather than a time-limited work authorization, and the employer must demonstrate through DOL's labor certification that no qualified U.S. worker was displaced.
What documents should I prepare before asking an employer to sponsor my green card?
You'll need academic transcripts and diplomas with certified English translations, a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency if your degree is foreign-issued, and any professional licenses or certifications relevant to your specialization such as biomedical device design or clinical engineering. Having these ready before your employer begins the PERM recruitment process prevents the most common documentation delays, which can add months to the overall timeline.
How long does the PERM green card process typically take for a Biomedical Engineer?
The full process from PERM filing to receiving a green card generally runs two to four years for most nationalities, though it can extend significantly longer for nationals of India and China due to visa backlog queues. DOL's PERM processing alone currently averages over a year for analyst review cases. The I-140 petition at USCIS adds additional time, followed by the adjustment of status or consular processing stage. Your employer's attorney can give you a realistic estimate based on your country of birth and current DOL processing times.
How do I find Biomedical Engineer jobs where the employer will sponsor a green card?
Most job postings don't advertise green card sponsorship explicitly, so you need to focus on employers with a documented history of PERM filings in engineering roles. Use Migrate Mate to search for Biomedical Engineer positions at companies that have sponsored employment-based green cards before. Targeting employers who already understand the PERM process significantly reduces the friction of getting a sponsorship commitment during offer negotiations.
