Match your credentials to EB-3 requirements
Gather documentation showing your technical training, certifications, and hands-on experience before applying. USCIS evaluates whether your background meets the specific requirements stated in the PERM job description, so gaps in documentation slow the case.
Target contractors with active PERM history
Large general contractors, engineering firms, and infrastructure companies file PERM cases far more often than small subcontractors. Use DOL's OFLC disclosure data to identify which employers have sponsored construction roles in the past two years.
Verify the prevailing wage before your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the current Level I through IV wage tiers for construction technician roles in the city where you'll work.
Search for sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by construction-related job titles and green card sponsorship to surface employers with verified PERM filing activity. Migrate Mate surfaces employer-level sponsorship history so you can prioritize applications to companies that have completed the process before.
Understand the PERM recruitment stage timeline
PERM requires your employer to run mandatory recruitment, including job postings and newspaper ads, before DOL reviews the application. This recruitment window takes at least 30 days, so expect several months between your accepted offer and the actual PERM filing.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment during offer negotiations
Some federal construction contracts require employers to use E-Verify for all new hires. Ask whether your prospective employer is enrolled before accepting an offer, since E-Verify enrollment also signals a compliance-oriented HR team familiar with immigration sponsorship paperwork.
Green Card Construction Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Technician role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Construction Technician positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled worker roles, since they typically require at least two years of training or experience rather than an advanced degree. EB-2 sponsorship is possible if the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field like civil engineering technology, but the employer must document that requirement clearly in the PERM job description.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for this role?
The H-1B visa requires your position to qualify as a specialty occupation, which is difficult to establish for most construction technician roles. EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM has no annual lottery and leads to permanent residency rather than temporary status. The tradeoff is a longer timeline: PERM approval, I-140 filing, and priority date availability can take two to four years depending on your country of birth.
What does the PERM process look like for a Construction Technician?
Your employer files a PERM application with DOL after completing a mandatory recruitment period showing no qualified U.S. workers were available for the role. DOL then certifies the application, which the employer uses to file an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. You can file for adjustment of status once your priority date becomes current in the Visa Bulletin.
How can I find Construction Technician jobs that include green card sponsorship?
Most job postings don't explicitly advertise PERM sponsorship, so searching by job title alone won't surface sponsoring employers. Migrate Mate lets you filter for construction roles by green card sponsorship history, so you can identify companies that have completed the PERM process before and are likely to sponsor again.
What role does O*NET play in the PERM application for this position?
DOL uses O*NET occupation codes to classify jobs and establish prevailing wage levels during the PERM process. Your employer's attorney will map the Construction Technician role to the correct O*NET code, which determines the wage tier your employer must meet. Reviewing the O*NET profile for your specific duties helps you confirm the classification is accurate before PERM is filed.
