Document your scope before PERM begins
PERM labor certification locks in the job duties at filing. If your current role spans enterprise portfolio management, cross-functional delivery, or organizational change at scale, make sure your employer's job description captures that scope precisely before the DOL process starts.
Distinguish EB-2 versus EB-3 eligibility early
This role can qualify under either EB-2 or EB-3 depending on your degree level and how the employer defines minimum requirements. A master's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field usually supports EB-2 filing, which can shorten your priority date wait significantly.
Target employers with established PERM filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Director of Technical Program Management roles by green card sponsorship history, so you're applying to employers who have completed PERM for this title before, not organizations encountering the process for the first time.
Verify the prevailing wage tier before negotiating salary
PERM requires your offered wage to meet the DOL prevailing wage for your location and job zone. Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the Level III or Level IV wage for this occupation before your offer letter is drafted, not after.
Ask about concurrent I-140 and I-485 filing windows
If your priority date is current when PERM is approved, you may file your I-140 petition and I-485 adjustment of status simultaneously through USCIS. Concurrent filing lets you access travel and work authorization benefits earlier in the green card process.
Confirm O*NET alignment for your specific responsibilities
PERM officers compare your job duties against the O*NET occupation profile for this role. If your scope includes strategic vendor management or executive-level program governance beyond the standard profile, your employer's attorney should document that alignment explicitly in the filing.
Green Card Director Of Technical Program Management: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Director of Technical Program Management role qualify for an EB-2 green card?
Yes, if the employer sets a master's degree or equivalent as the minimum requirement and the role involves specialized knowledge, the position typically supports EB-2 classification. If the employer only requires a bachelor's degree, the filing defaults to EB-3 skilled worker. The distinction affects your priority date and how long you wait for a visa number to become available.
How does the PERM green card process differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B visa is a temporary nonimmigrant status with a six-year base limit and annual lottery exposure. PERM-based sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no cap lottery and no expiration once approved. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM requires a DOL-supervised recruitment process that typically runs six to eighteen months before you can even file the I-140 petition with USCIS.
What does the PERM recruitment process require of my employer?
Your employer must conduct a DOL-prescribed recruitment campaign, including print and online job postings, to demonstrate no qualified U.S. workers were available for the position. For a Director-level role, the employer must also post a Notice of Filing internally. All recruitment must be completed before the PERM application is submitted, and records are retained in case of an audit.
How can I find Director of Technical Program Management jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for this job title filtered by employers who have sponsored green cards before, which removes the guesswork of reaching out to companies unfamiliar with PERM. Targeting employers with prior sponsorship history for director-level roles reduces the risk of your case stalling due to inexperienced HR or legal teams.
Can I change jobs after my green card PERM is filed?
Once your I-140 is approved and your priority date has been pending for 180 days or more, you may be able to port your green card to a same or similar occupational classification under AC21 portability rules. Director of Technical Program Management roles generally fall within a broad enough SOC code that lateral moves to comparable titles at a new employer may qualify.
